Siesta Fiesta is the 3DS eShop game I had no idea I wanted

Catching a nap

Maybe it's just me, but there's something about the classic Breakout gameplay formula that I find naturally engaging. You can add in as many bells and whistles as you want, but the simple act of trying to keep a bouncing ball in play will always be easy to understand and enjoy. Wizorb did a great job of shaking up the Breakout formula--and now there's Siesta Fiesta to look forward to, a 3DS eShop game that blindsided me with simple yet charming gameplay.

Relatively simple, that is--because the game purposely tries to distract you with as much confetti, dancing bystanders, and snazzy effects as possible. The main goal is to bounce the rotund boy Siesta from left to right, snagging grapes and avoiding point-draining explosions along the way (all of which Siesta somehow manages to sleep through). But you don't control him directly: all you can do is move his bed to bounce him, Breakout-style, around the playfield.

This is one of the few games where playing with the 3D cranked all the way up is a blast--the vibrant art style and abundant background details lend themselves perfectly to additional depth of field. And while the gameplay might sound insanely straightforward, Siesta Fiesta can get surprisingly hard, particularly since you've got a mere five lives to make it through the hazard-laden stages. Easy to get into, hard to master--sounds like the making of a great little eShop game.

You'll have to master three methods of control: the classic paddle style, a cannon, or a powerful fan, all of which require different kinds of finesse.

There's usually so much going on that it's easy to lose track of Siesta. That's intentional.
