Neill Blomkamps Alien sequel wont undo Alien 3 or Alien: Resurrection

Neill Blomkamp has moved to clarify his recent comments about his upcoming Alien sequel, explaining that his film will not undo the events documented in Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection.

Blomkamp had previously described his film as “the genetic sibling of Aliens”, saying “it’s Alien, Aliens and then this film”. However, that’s not to say he’s rejecting the next two films as part of the official canon…

“My favourites are the first two movies,” says Blomkamp to AlloCine. “So I want to make a film that’s connected to Alien and Aliens. That’s my goal. I’m not trying to undo Alien 3 or Alien: Resurrection, I just want it to be connected to Alien and Aliens.”

Which is a little different to saying that the new film will completely rewrite the events of the last two films, even if it will be a lot closer in spirit to the original two…

Meanwhile, Sigourney Weaver is thrilled to be returning, telling the outlet that she has been waiting for the opportunity to finish Ripley’s story in style.

“I always wanted to complete this story,” she says, “and it wasn’t really until Neill and I started talking that I said, ‘this is why we waited however many years its been’.”

The new film is expected to arrive in 2017, with a specific release date yet to be confirmed.
