With Captain America: The Winter Soldier about to arrive in cinemas, plans for the sequel are already afoot, with screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely discussing where they might take the character next.
“You can probably predict some of the threads we would like to pick up again that we’ve laid out there,” says McFeely, when asked whether the plan is to go back through the comics for inspiration.
“And we always go back to the comics and dive back in and look at anything we’ve missed in the last few years that might be relevant.”
“We’ve definitely set out on a more realistic road in the Cap movies,” continues Markus. “Even more grounded than in the other MCU movies. And so it kind of rules out Cap fighting the Dinosaur Man or something like that.”
“There are some that aren’t gonna start and other ones that - I mean there’s a couple we’re playing with right now that we really want to take elements from. Which we’ll not reveal.”
When pressed, Markus went on to add, “all I’m saying is psychotic 1950s Cap,” a reference to a storyline that saw a pair of substitutes pumped up with super-serum in order to fight the “red threat” of Communism, while the real Cap was in suspended animation.
However, that batch of the serum had severe psychotic side-effects, causing the government to place the new duo in suspended animation, before they would eventually go on to battle the real Cap and Bucky.
Whether or not that was a throwaway comment from Markus remains to be seen, but it’s certainly an intriguing idea. In the meantime, Captain America: The Winter Soldier will open in the UK on 26 March 2014.
