Benedict Cumberbatch has been drawing parallels between Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Strange. His conclusion? There aren’t many. When asked at the San Diego Comic Con whether playing Sherlock prepared him for the role of Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme, he responded: "No, not really. Dr Strange is…"
"Strange?" quipped Sherlock actor/writer Mark Gatiss. "No, no," retorted Cumberbatch. "Sherlock is a lot more effing strange than Strange, strangely enough." Pausing while the Hall H crowd laughed, he added: "I think that’s the difference: Strange is fully humanised. He does seek control through the perfection of his work.
"He's a workaholic, but he does have emotional ties and relationships. He’s a man of the sensory world, and Sherlock certainly is trying to curtail those appetites to concentrate on being the best consulting detective in the world.
Article continues below"And culturally they’re utterly different," Cumberbatch concluded. "One’s very English, one’s very American."
Directed by Scott Derrickson and starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams, Michael Stuhlbarg and Mads Mikkelsen, Doctor Strange is released in UK cinemas on October 28, 2016 before opening in US theatres on November 4, 2016.
