Some years it's hard to come up with a clear-cut winner, because there aren't games that stand out in a particular category. This year, for almost every award, it's been hard to pick just one to take the crown as the best in that group. The TXB staff fussed and debated, they yelled and slammed things down, they furiously IMed and e-mailed among themselves¿ and what follows are TXB's selections.

¿ Best Action Game of the Year -- Crackdown
¿ Best Shooter of the Year -- Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
¿ Best Role-Playing Game of the Year -- Mass Effect
¿ Best Sports Game of the Year -- NHL 08
¿ Best Racing Game of the Year -- Forza Motorsport 2
¿ Best Fighting Game of the Year -- Virtua Fighter 5
¿ Best Music/Rhythm/Party Game of the Year -- Rock Band
¿ Best Multiplayer Game of the Year -- Halo 3
¿ Best Sleeper Hit of the Year -- Crackdown
¿ Best Xbox Live Arcade of the Year -- Switchball
¿ Best Graphics of the Year -- Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
¿ Best Sound of the Year -- BioShock
¿ Best Visual Style of the Year -- BioShock
¿ Best Story of the Year -- Mass Effect
¿ Best Hardware/Peripheral of the Year -- Xbox 360 Elite System
¿ Developer of the Year -- Infinity Ward
¿ Game of the Year -- Mass Effect

TXB wants to hear what you have to say about their picks, and also get your selections for what you believe are the best games in each category. Be sure to offer the TXB staff your feedback in the forums, and also fill out the Readers' Choice form with your votes. They'll compile what the TeamXbox community has to say and report the results after the holidays.
In 2007 though, weve had a very good year indeed. A scarily good year in fact. One which has provided us so much brilliance on every format that its a genuine worry that the laws of karmic balance will soon bring us a plague ...

With three new items for each character (none of which are available in the course of the standard game), that brings the total to a rather healthy 51 items.

Xbox 360 owners rejoiced when Sega and AM2 announced that their version of Virtua Fighter 5 would incorporate long desired online multiplayer features, but PlayStation 3 gamers who'd picked up the game earlier in the year felt left in the cold. A Games Convention 2007 interview with AM2 Assistant Manager Tohru Murayama at Total Video Games, however, provides hope for the future.

Murayama acknowledged that PS3 owners are disappointed and suggested there was "no doubt" AM2 could theoretically release a patch to add online multiplayer features to the PS3 version.

Eurogamer has learned that the Xbox 360 version of Virtua Fighter 5 may not be released in Japan due to the console's low installed base.

Speaking at last week's Leipzig Games Convention, lead designer Tohru Murayama said "it's true" that 360 has not proved too popular with Japanese gamers.

He continued, "We haven't decided if we'll release Virtua Fighter 5 [on 360] in Japan because of that.
You know, hundreds of hours of time. The kind of game that kept Granny away from gaming until Wii came along. It's about depth - of learning and understanding a game before truly mastering it. Hardcore games present the greatest (and often longest) challenges, yet also the biggest payoffs, assuming you understand how they work.

Of course, ...

The votes have been tallied and the Best of E3 2007 Winners have been announced.

Rock Band with 3 seperate votes took first...just barely ahead of Mass Effect who placed second with 2 votes. However, the surprise comes with the games that took the rest of the places:

Bioshock
Burnout Paradise
Call of Duty 4
Crysis
Halo 3
Killzone 2
LittleBigPlanet
Madden NFL 08
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Virtua Fighter 5
World in Conflict

Gamecriticsawards.com even broke down the tally further and the console with the most wins was...Xbox 360 (acquiring 11 wins), followed in second by the Playstation 3 (aquiring 8 votes). Third place was the PC (with 4 votes), and tied for fourth was both the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS. Oddly enough, the PSP was last...not even getting one game on the list this year!
It's just a matter of time before we start breaking down what will be on display and what will be worth checking out for fall (and future) gaming. For now, you can count on CB Games to provide you with a complete break-down of Sega's multi-game line-up for E3 2007."

In years past, publishers have used the Electronic Entertainment Expo to announce new games, taking advantage of the global audience tuned in to the trade show. However, as it did last year, Sega has played the bricklayer, paving its road to E3 well in advance with announcements for games such as Mario & Sonic at the Olympics, Ghost Squad, and NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams. However, while the publisher isn't using the annual trade show as a venue for its big reveal, Sega's lineup includes many games whose details have been sparse at best.
Virtua Fighter 5 on Xbox 360 will feature online multiplayer (News)

There have been a lot of rumors since Virtua Fighter 5 was announced for the Xbox 360. Would there be Xbox Live multiplayer or wouldn't there be? SEGA, at first, said: 'No, it wont', but today SEGA confirmed that the Xbox 360 version of Virtua Fighter 5 will indeed be featuring online multiplayer duels over Xbox Live.

And that's not all. The Xbox 360 version will feature the latest update in playmechanics from the Arcade version. Also, the Quest Mode has been expanded, with more CPU-opponents to fight with as well as more objects and articles to customize your character with. That's not all because the DOJO-mode will also be receiving an update on the Xbox 360 version. New functions have been added, like: rankings, training settings, throw- and defensive training as well as a feature to adjust the opponents health and position.

Probably the biggest improvement will be the addition of online multiplayer duels through Xbox Live. Players can compete 1-on-1 with any player from around the world. Players can choose from a total of 17 different characters, which are all individually customizable. Each character has four different costumes but more costumes can be unlocked by playing the Quest Mode. Release: Autumn 2007.
Earlier this year, we were able to travel to Japan to see an early version of Virtua Fighter 5 for the Xbox 360. At that time, the developers were certain that online play could not be included - as it would compromise the quality of the play experience too much.

That changed today. Sega has announced that, when it ships this fall, Virtua Fighter 5 for the Xbox 360 will, in fact, feature an online versus mode. To find out more, we spoke again to Yoshihiro Tsuzuku, the 360 version's ...
The Virtua Fighter games have always been the most hardcore of all beat-'em-ups. The complexity of the fighting system is leagues beyond the likes of Tekken, Soul Calibur or Dead or Alive, but - a little ironically - that complexity has long been a weakness outside of Japan's arcades. Virtua Fighter 5 goes beyond "depth;" where Soul Calibur is almost immediately accessible and fun even for button-mashers, Virtua Fighter is simply too complicated for the average gamer to ever sink in to. Writer Christian Nutt (har har) raved about his time with the game, saying it looked as good, if not better, than the already released PlayStation 3 game.

Today, Sega released a few new screens of the game and well, it looks ... not that bad. It doesn't look that great either, so what's up?
Virtua Fighter is more than a simple game to the Japanese - it's a phenomenon. Players gather at the Club Sega arcade in Akihabara, Tokyo to battle it out in massive tournaments - or just play for fun, as the best players gather at that spot. We were allowed to enter that domain with a camera, and we caught the 43 screens of Friday night VF5 action. We even interviewed Shinichiro Nagamine, a manager at the popular arcade, to find out the juiciest details about the competitions at the six-floor ...

"Hi, there! I'm Tohru Murayama from SEGA AM-2. In this fourth installment of the VF5 developer diaries I'm going to talk about the Dojo mode this time.

Regarding the title "Dojo", which means training hall, I'm a bit worried since I have no idea to what extent it will be accepted. Those who love martial arts or professional wrestling would understand the term, but I don't think it is a well-known Japanese word like sushi or samurai. In short, a DOJO is the place for practice or training of Martial arts such as JUDO and KENDO (Japanese fencing). As far as the DOJO in VF5, this is the mode that lets you train the characters of your choosing."
More at source.
Much like the Winning Eleven series, there are two ways to play Virtua Fighter games. Theres the “casual” post-bar, fight-it-out-with-a-friend kind of way, and then theres the slavish, almost scientific approach - fueled by the sort of devotion thats made the series so hugely popular in Japanese arcades.

For those who prefer option one, Virtua Fighter 5 wont disappoint. On the surface, its definitely a next-gen game, with hyper-detailed looks not so different from the stunning ...
Friday 22 December 2006
In a move that we're sure has caused surprise, shock and much gnashing of teeth inside Sony, Sega has announced that Virtua Fighter 5 is landing on Xbox 360 in the middle of next year.

The fifth generation fighter had previously only been set to appear on PS3 in the spring, but now it seems that 360 owners will also get their own version of the arcade bruiser just a little later on.

Sega's Matt Woodley was the man with the platitudes saying: "Those people lucky enough ...
The latest entry in Sega's venerable martial arts series was previously announced as a PS3 exclusive, but now Virtua votaries won't be compelled to seek out a PS3 to get their Fighter fix. 360 owners will have to wait until "late summer 2007" to enter the arena, while PS3 owners need only wait until February ...

Sega confirms the latest version of its VF series will now launch on Xbox 360, as well as PS3

Tecmo's Dead or Alive series is about to get some serious competition for the king of fighters' throne on Xbox 360 in the form of Virtua Fighter 5, previously a PS3 only title.

Hopefully, the fact that VF is spreading out on multiple platforms will give the DOA series a much needed kick up the arse. But Sega's legendary beat 'em up franchise has taken a few knocks of its own over the last few years. Maybe it's just that the genre as a whole has gone as far as it can?
