They're just carrot-dangling tactics that we're happy to indulge for our greedy pursuit of intangible virtual rewards. We wouldn't think twice about nail-bombing a kitten orphanage if it meant five more gamer points.

But, let's say, purely for the purposes of this here article, that we take Achievements and Trophies out of their virtual world settings and reconsider them ...

In Lyon, France today Atari has announced its fiscal results for the first quarter ended June 30. Total revenues were up 30.1% to 54.5 million euros, thanks mainly to the success of two titles: Ghostbusters: The Video Game and The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena.

The U.S. business drove the bulk of sales with 45.5 million euros in the quarter, which is an 82% increase. This offset a nearly 49% decline in the European business, as revenues dropped to 8.6 million euros. In the U.S., Atari also noted that it saw improved third-party distribution revenues, which now represent approximately 33% of U.S. Distribution revenues (thanks to local distribution deals with ZOO Games and CDV Software Entertainment).

The publisher was speaking to Eurogamer to clarify comments made by Tigon Studios head of production Ian Stevens, who told us during Atari Live that a true sequel was "a couple of years out", describing Dark Athena as an "episodic expansion"."
But, most shockingly, it's actually got some great games to back it up. Here are five games Atari were showing off that we reckon you're going to want to play. ...

That's right -- Dark Athena is not a remake of 2004's brilliant Escape from Butcher Bay. And when Universal Interactive's Bill Kispert called Athena's new campaign "robust," he wasn't kidding. This puppy clocks in at 10 hours.

For all intents and purposes, Dark Athena is a sequel; and as it so happens, Atari marketing materials reflect this fact as well.

"Riddick and the Ghostbusters have both found a new home at one of America's oldest videogame companies.

Atari has bought rights to publish the videogame sequel to "The Chronicles of Riddick" and a new game based on "Ghostbusters" from Activision Blizzard, which declined to pick up the two projects after merging with Vivendi Games this summer."

Xabout: "Seemingly forever ago, Vivendi and developer Starbreeze announced The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, a next-gen remake of their cult hit Xbox game, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. But after that announcement, the game seemingly dropped off of the radar. The general consensus among gamers was that it had been quietly cancelled. I can tell you today, happily, that it is still coming along and seems to be closer to release than you'd think."

A Sierra Entertainment spokesperson has confirmed to Pro-G that The Chronicles Of Riddick: Assault On Dark Athena, the re-invention of the acclaimed PC and Xbox FPS Escape from Butcher Bay, is now scheduled to ship in 2008. No reason for the delay was given.

Back in May when the title was first announced Sierra revealed that Starbreeze Studios is handling development and would be sprucing the title up with enhanced visuals, a new story chapter and online multiplayer.
Really, it would be all too easy to throw our pads down and sit in the corner sulking, as following hot on the heals of Ninja Gaiden Sigma, theres news of yet another Xbox port making its way to PS3. Is this what Sonys behemoth of a console has come to? Forced to offer refuge to underplayed old Xbox games? As we say, it would be easy to bemoan the lack of original games until you take stock and remember that these are underplayed games, few people ever bought into Xbox and so missed many great ...
Sierra has finally blown the official lid off the PS3 and Xbox 360 game, The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, which is a remake of Starbreeze's original Riddick first-person shooter.

The remake package features what's called a "reinvention" of the original Escape from Butcher Bay game, which we're told takes advantage of the power under the consoles' hoods and delivers "2004's award-winning experience in high definition with stunning enhancements," in addition to the new Dark ...
