In the context of a game, Achievements and Trophies are harmless. They're just carrot-dangling tactics that we're happy to indulge for our greedy pursuit of intangible virtual rewards. We wouldn't think twice about nail-bombing a kitten orphanage if it meant five more gamer points.

But, let's say, purely for the purposes of this here article, that we take Achievements and Trophies out of their virtual world settings and reconsider them ...

Ghostbusters, Riddick Drive Atari Sales Up 30% in Q1 (News)

In Lyon, France today Atari has announced its fiscal results for the first quarter ended June 30. Total revenues were up 30.1% to 54.5 million euros, thanks mainly to the success of two titles: Ghostbusters: The Video Game and The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena.

The U.S. business drove the bulk of sales with 45.5 million euros in the quarter, which is an 82% increase. This offset a nearly 49% decline in the European business, as revenues dropped to 8.6 million euros. In the U.S., Atari also noted that it saw improved third-party distribution revenues, which now represent approximately 33% of U.S. Distribution revenues (thanks to local distribution deals with ZOO Games and CDV Software Entertainment).

Eurogamer writes: "Atari has said that Assault on Dark Athena, the new adventure built on top of Escape from Butcher Bay, lasts about 11 hours, is based on an entirely new engine and features six multiplayer modes.

A Sierra Entertainment spokesperson has confirmed to Pro-G that The Chronicles Of Riddick: Assault On Dark Athena, the re-invention of the acclaimed PC and Xbox FPS Escape from Butcher Bay, is now scheduled to ship in 2008. No reason for the delay was given.

Back in May when the title was first announced Sierra revealed that Starbreeze Studios is handling development and would be sprucing the title up with enhanced visuals, a new story chapter and online multiplayer.
