Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

Unlikely to bring order to the galaxy...

However, the main problem with the physics is that there’s just too much clutter on screen at once, and this makes selecting targets awkward. Allow us to explain. Say there’s a stormtrooper shooting you and you want to pick him up, electrocute him, and lob his corpse at another enemy (a lightning grenade!). Chances are that when you activate the Force to pick him up, you’ll grab hold of a useless hunk of garbage and throw that instead. You’ll try again. And again. Then by the time you’ve selected your foe, all your Force energy will be spent. Then you’ll die. Then you’ll be cross.

Later in the game it becomes a real issue, as foes get tougher and tougher to kill. So, instead of trying to get creative with the world around you, you’ll fall back on the trusty technique of slamming your enemy with a lightning bolt and wading in with a lightsaber combo just to survive the tougher battles. All of a sudden the dynamic, combo-based action game that The Force Unleashed was supposed to be just ends up as a button-basher. The fact is that in the more hectic battles, where lasers are hitting you from all sides, you don’t have time to get fancy and that saps the fun out of the game. Try a nifty move and you’ll end up on the floor, losing half your energy bar as the Apprentice casually gets back to his feet.

The other major bugbear we have with the game is the dodgy camera. Yeah, it’s a common complaint for third-person action games, and no, we’re not just going to shut up and get used to it. Although not as bad as many other cameras, this one will obscure the odd character (especially during boss battles) and it makes all platforming sections thoroughly miserable. In fact, there isn’t much of anything to break up the repetitive flow of the game. The Force Unleashed even has the cheek to recycle most of its levels, so expect to visit locations more than once. Even the extras, which see you learning new moves and tinkering with your lightsaber, are blander than a bowl of branflakes with no milk. Leveling up is a bit of a non-event, and we wonder if it might have been better to give the player everything from the start so they can work out how to mix up their moves as they go along. Elsewhere, lightsaber colour crystals (which you have to scour each level for) are little more than gaming fluff and power crystals are similarly uninspiring.

So, The Force Unleashed is more of a highly impressive tech demo with a great narrative tagged on, with any actual game present inserted only as an afterthought. Do you buy it? Well, that depends on how much you love Star Wars. The story is fantastic, and there’s a certain satisfaction to be had from hurling Tie-Fighters at Jawas… but the game still feels like a wasted opportunity.

I had a suspicion this game would be repetitive. I think this is a rental, just for the plot and to see the physics engine in action..

One question though...

Is dismember a feature in this game?

I remember playing the demo, not liking it at all, promising myself that it was just an early build. Then I realized the game was coming out just a month after the demo was released...
I'm a sucker for Star Wars though, so whatever, I'll rent it probably.

The demo was fucking frustrating, what with the spotty targeting/camera. Seems like a good rent though for a Star Wars lover such as myself.

I already bought it and it's not that repetitive. It's also great fun to pick up a stormtrooper, shock him, and fling him across the map at more stormtroopers.

I give it and 8.5 to a 9

Disappointing...

I think you guys have the right idea, a fine rental but not worth my all too scarce cash. I played the demo and felt incredibly bored, but am really looking forward to the story.

I wish I knew how to react. I feel like an infant seeing his favorite teddy bear engulfed in flames. I mean I understand a 7 isn't a horrible score, but that means it's mediocre. So maybe months from now I'll see this reduced to 20 bucks and I'll buy it then.

for some reason, gametrailers gave it relatively the same score, yet for some reason, i am much more satisfied with your review. i think its because most of your complaints with the game resonate much better with me. it sounds like u really wanted to love the game, but its problems got in the way. much appreciated gamesradar. wish i could rent it, but ill probably have to buy it...

Major disappointment. :(

Not enough hours per game. Genius. GamesRadar you always know how to make a snappy comment about a game. That's why I love ya. I do love this game though, and I'm well aware that it's not so great. I just love this canon storyline and I'm genuinely intrigued by it. I'm the kind of Star Wars fan who can refer to every vehicle by its acronym and refer you to multiple theories on how Vader brought balance to the Force, though so take that with a grain of salt. :D

How did I know this wouldn't muster more than a 7? because it was overhyped. the more anticipation, the more let down

it's like Count Dooku said in Episode III
"Twice the pride, double the fall."

i'll give my money for this game if it is in a deal package with a 360, since im wanting to buy one since my brother got a PS3

Aaaaahhhhh!!!! What to do?? I thought it would be something like this. I agree with Z-man, it has been overhyped and I've been caught up in iy all. I thought it might be another Battlefront but it turns out to be a let down. I'm going to get it anyway though because I can't bring myself to take it off my birthday list. I'll get the Wii version because I like the look of the dual mode and I think that waggle controls might suit this game better. Overall a bit of a let down but I suppose we had it coming to us for giving it such a high standard to fulfill.

It was inevitable.

I have the Wii version, looks like crap. I'm starting to think that Sony is purposefully keeping the PS2 alive and PSP just so that developers will port over weak graphics and hasty waggle controls to the Wii. (Though, to be fair, the waggle controls are pretty decent on Force Unleashed) Because the Wii version looks like shit.
I put in Rogue Squadron 2 and 3 for the Gamecube, and BOTH those games look better than this PSP build ported to the Wii. It's really disappointing because the Wii isn't totally next gen, but it's capable of so much more.
Also, repetitive waggle controls become more repetitive than repetitive button mashing. I think a No More Hereos style of gameplay would have been more fun. Playing it just makes me want to go back to Jedi Knight II.

Still, can anyone compare the two builds for me? (Next gen Unleashed and PSP/Wii/PS2 Unleashed)I've heard that level design for the Wii/PS2/PSP version is a little better, and less bland, even though it obviously doesn't look as good.

Force Unleashed, or FU, if you will. Ironic, because I really kinda feel like it is an "FU" to the fans. I wonder how much better it would have been if they hadn't fired the dev team right before launch.
Ravenbom  - 1 year 2 months ago
@ Z-man427 good, almost apropos quote, except for the fact that Dooku said that like 2 minutes before he got his hands and head cut off.

Which makes me think, even in Jedi Knight II, you could cut off hands every so often, even without the entering the cheat code. Anakin is basically a stump at the end of EP3, and every lightsaber battle in the movies has limbs flying off, so why does the Force Unleashed make it feel like you're waving around a glow stick at a rave?
Especially in the Xbox demo, when you just stand there and block blaster bolts.

Maybe I'm playing the Force Unleashed wrong; maybe if I take some illicit substances and pump up some bass heavy club music, I'll think FU is the best game in the world.

Sadly, I agree this game is way to short i have been anticipating this game for years and i pre-ordered it. I took a day off to get the game and play it for a lil and i ended up beating it in 4 hours. (Dont call me a nerd lol) But i would have givin it at least an 8 i mean cmon what other game do u kno of where u can sith punt a jawa... But yea im a huge Star Wars fan and im pretty disappointed with the length of the game. I guess im going to have to return the game...
