Earth Defense Force X - hands-on

The enemies of earth are swarming... and here's you, guns blazing

What we didn't get to play - and where we expect a great deal of fun to potentially come from - is the co-op mode. Sure, we had computer-controlled teammates, but that's... well, you know how that is. Irrelevant, unless they're total geniuses (and Gears of War couldn't even get it right, so what's the hope that EDFX does? Slim to none.) We also didn't get to spend as much time as we want to with the weaponry - though dozens of rifles, shotguns and bombs were listed in the pre-level loadout screen, we messed around with only a handful. This is a game that's all about numbers. The cityscapes overwhelmed by enemies are just the tip of the iceberg, here.

We're cautiously optimistic about EDFX. While it's obvious that the game doesn't have the polish or care put into it that many 360 shooters do - we were playing the final, released Japanese version, so we're pretty sure what we saw is what you'll get - it's making up for it with ridiculous balls-out action. It cribs its style from '50s disaster movies, classic shooters and modern military games. That's a bizarre, hilarious and intense mixture that isn't quite like anything we've played before. And for that, we'll forgive a few things.
