Incestuous. That’s the best way to explain the ongoing relationship between horror films and games. First games stole from films in early licenses like Halloween and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, then horror films stole from games, most obviously in the ‘works’ of Uwe Boll like House of the Dead and BloodRayne.

These are the genre’s defining relics. Some are responsible for the very creation of the zombie mythos, others adapted and advanced it, while the rest simply encapsulate it so exquisitely that they must be experienced. This may not be everyone’s definitive list of zombie lore ...

We hate rubbish endings. There's nothing more unsatisfying than becoming emotionally attached to a game for 10 or so hours and then have it end on a whimper. It's like having a really tasty meal and then finding a rusty nail in your last forkful. A nail that ends in an unsatisfying cliff-hanger, cheesy line or unresolved plot thread. And sod everyone who says it's about the journey, not the destination. The following games all take you on a ...

We need to be told what to do in a game from time to time. We rely on helpful characters to issue us with objectives and point us in the right direction. Imagine the wasted hours if they weren't there to help. Trouble is, some of them go about it all wrong and - although they're trying to help - just get right on our tits. Honestly, Navi's a joy compared with these nagging characters that need to STFU.

...

411mania gives a rundown on this week's game releases. Highlights include Legacy of Ys: Books I & II, Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop, Stoked, The King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match, 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand, and Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.

Legacy of Ys: Books I & II (DS)
Ys I and II have seen many ports and remakes since the first one came out in 1987; they've seen the light of day on such systems as the PC-8801, Famicom, Master System, DOS, Apple II, Saturn, and PS2 to name a few. The most widely-known versions are contained in the TurboGrafx-CD compilation, and for years that release was considered the best. It's place at the top was eventually challenged by Ys Eternal as it sported upgraded graphics, effects, and artwork as well as extras like new characters and scenarios. Unfortunately, Eternal didn't include voiceovers and some say that the remixed music was not as good. Apparently, enough people weren't satisfied so another update known as Ys Complete, which is said to have better graphics but an inferior soundtrack, was unleashed. Despite my best efforts, I could not find any agreement amongst Ys fans as to which official release is the definitive version since each of the three does at least one thing better than the others.

Preferences aside, there is one thing that fans of the first two Ys games can agree on no matter which version they've played - Ys I and II have some of the best music you will find in a video game. Every place I visited for info makes note of how awesome the soundtrack is. Knowing this, I questioned whether or not it was a good idea to play the games on the DS for the first time when I could just as easily track down the PC version and patch it or download the Wii VC one. Granted, Legacy of Ys comes with a free soundtrack if you preorder and it is portable. Maybe it would be easier to just flip a coin...

In 2009, they will be focusing on releasing primarily multiplatform games for both the PlayStation 3 and XBox 360. This includes the sequel to the 360 exclusive zombie beat 'em up, Dead Rising. The sequel has finally been confirmed, and is due to hit in 2009. Capcom does promise some special goodies exclusive to the 360 version, in order to show it's good will towards the console.

"'Halo Wars'Here's one more important "Halo Wars" fact that I learned during my recent interview with the game's lead writer, Graeme Devine:

-The Game's Text Won't Repeat The Mistakes Of "Banjo-Kazooie" - Several prominent Xbox 360 games have been programmed to display text in such small sizes that words can't be read on standard definition TVs. Pity the gamer who hadn't splurged on an HD set. This was an issue with Capcom's "Dead Rising" in 2006 (which was never fixed) and Microsoft/Rare's "Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts" earlier this year (which Rare plans to be fix)."
Capcom has finally won the lawsuit, though it took a lot longer than common sense would've dictated.
Dead Rising is a survival horror game by the zombie masters over at Capcom that centers on Frank West, a photojournalist who ends up trapped in a huge shopping mall infested with thousands of zombies and it's up to you to try surviving the next three days and rescue as many people as possible."
Capcom was being sued over the game by the MKR Group, which holds the rights to George Romerso's Dawn of the Dead film. MKR claimed that Dead Rising was essentially an unlicensed adaptation of the Romero film. Over the weekend, George Romero appeared at the Chicago Horror Convention, and Kotaku reader Tyler was on hand to get his copy of Dead Rising autographed by the famed horror director. According to Tyler:

I went to a horror movie convention here in Chicago on Sunday because George Romero was due to show up for autograph signing and I was hoping he would grace my copy of Dead Rising with his signature (not expecting that he would at all). Lo and behold he actually did, and on top of that, he was not even aware of Dead Rising...i had to explain to him what it was and he was happy to sign it. Makes me wonder if he is even aware of the legal battles Capcom has had to endure."

An independent movie producer with rights to the horror movie George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead sued video game maker Capcom Co Ltd on Monday in the latest salvo in a copyright dispute.

The producer, MKR Group, alleged that Capcom's popular Dead Rising game was essentially a computer game version of its Dawn of the Dead movies.

Earlier this month, Capcom filed a case against MKR in a California federal court, seeking a declaration that the game did not infringe on MKR's intellectual property rights. It also sought an injunction to prevent MKR from suing the company.

Yougamers.com has done a bit of sleuthing and discovered that Dead Rising is slated to come to a PC near you before the end of 2007. The release date was originally set at September 28, but after contacting sources within Capcom that date has changed to sometime before the end of the year.

Either way, Dead Rising is coming to the PC before the year is out.
Dead Rising was refused a rating by the USK in the past but that doesn't mean that it can't be sold or marketed in the region, so the seizing of the title is a new turn of event in German's ever growing intolerance of violent video games.
Dead Rising producer Keiji Inafune has set the record straight on the current status of a sequel to the zombie-fest on Xbox 360, confirming that a follow-up isn't currently in production.

However, it is a title under consideration at Capcom Japan.

"...we're not making it [Dead Rising 2] right now," Inafune told Game Informer, but explained it's something he'd love to ...
The traditionally Japanese-focused company has seen enormous sales on the platform through Dead Rising and Lost Planet. Much of that, however, has come from sales in the United States and Europe -- as much as 90% of sales totals, actually.
Internet reports have stated that the follow-up to the company's Xbox 360 zombie splatterfest has been confirmed as being in development in the latest edition of Famitsu, leading to speculation that Dead Rising 2 will be unveiled at a Capcom press event happening this week.

Going by Capcom Europe's comments to us, that won't be the case - but you ...
Following the multiplatform tumble of nearly every game in existence, Capcom has said that its Xbox 360 exclusives Dead Rising and Lost Planet will not be following Devil May Cry 4's lead and hopping on the multiplatform bandwagon.

This is according to the company's director of strategic research, Christian Svensson, who posted on Capcom's official forums stating that the two 360 action games "are not slated to appear on Wii or PS3 as far as current plans go."

Svensson previously said in ...

A few days ago I posted a podcast from 1up.com that stated "important xbox360 exclusives coming over to the PS3". Heavy speculation derived at the conclusion it would be capcom bringing over 2 of their xbox exclusives Lost Planet and Dead Rising. In this blog posted quote by Christian Svensson Capcom Entertainment Inc's. - Sr. Director of Strategic Planning & Research he states in a question an answer:

Q: "What I am wondering, is since Capcom has claimed "Capcom is committed to making its titles available to as wide an audience as possible," does that mean Capcom will be making games that were exclusive to the Xbox 360 cross platform as they did with Devil May Cry or is that quote from Capcom more of just a PR man doing their job? Thanks"

Christian Svensson: "The answer is Dead Rising and Lost Planet are not slated to appear on Wii or PS3 as far as current plans go. The reasons for this are quite convoluted and I'm bound by NDAs on these matters so I can't divulge why this is the situation."
The co-op mode is rumored to be released in two different forms. The first will be with a platinum edition of the Xbox 360 game and the second as a download via Xbox Live, presumably for those that already own the game and don't want a co-op mode enough to pay out for the game again.

Capcom has yet to comment on ...
Longtime Capcom designer Kenji Inafune -- yes, the same guy who came up with Mega Man -- has evolved into more of a producer these days and was responsible for selling Capcom management on both games. They didn't bite, he says during an incredibly candid interview with Capcom community mogul Brian Dunn...
Let the haters and the old ladies complain about how those newfangled video computer games teach us to be killers; we've always taken the view that violent games are a pressure valve for blowing off steam in a harmless way. Don't believe it? Play something fierce and bloody the next time you're in a really bad mood, and then try telling us you didn't feel better afterward.

But why stop there? If games can keep you from climbing a clock tower and expressing your inner pain in the form of ...

The official story: "Microsoft does not comment on rumors or speculation." -- Microsoft rep. As for Capcom...see below

What we heard: It's no secret that Microsoft wants to break into the Japanese game market--badly. When the Xbox 360 launched in late 2005, it allocated a third of its launch stock to the island nation--where half of it gathered dust on store shelves while bored shopkeepers stood by picking their noses.

Microsoft has also tried the software approach, hiring Japanese game-design legends such as Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi and Space Channel mastermind Tetsuya Mizuguchi to make Xbox 360 exclusives. Unfortunately, the latter's first effort, Ninety-Nine Nights, fizzled on both sides of the Pacific. However, the former's debut, Blue Dragon, fared as well as an Xbox 360 game can in Japan, given the platform's limited base. It sold more than 80,000 units in its first four days on the Japanese market last fall.

Still, Microsoft hasn't spent tens of millions in Japan to eke out modest hits. So the fact that it might opt to acquire a major Japanese publisher seems perfectly plausible, given its near-bottomless bank account. Thus was spawned this week's top rumor, which had Microsoft buying Capcom, the developer-publisher behind the Resident Evil series, outright.

Sure, it makes sense. Capcom has made two critically acclaimed Xbox 360 games, Dead Rising and Lost Planet: Extreme Condition. (Look for the latter's review on GameSpot later today.) And Microsoft is flush with cash--$35 billion in reserves as of last summer, according to Reuters. So why not drop a relatively small chunk of change to take on Sony and Nintendo on their home turf?

However, plausibility does not equal reality. And in this case, the reality is that, for the time being, Microsoft is not buying Capcom. Apparently this latest orgy of speculation is an ancient rumor, resurrected by a Japanese blog pr...

Capcom's Mark Beaumont has said that the company will produce Dead Rising games "for years to come".

The original game, an Xbox 360 exclusive, has shipped over one million copies worldwide as of 31st December 2006.

Speaking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz, Beaumont attributed some of the game's success to punters' willingness "to take more of an experiment in what games they'll try" at the start of a hardware cycle.

Others would probably point to the 360's shortfall in first-party titles along the back straight of 2006, and the game's superb critical reception.

"Bringing out Dead Rising has allowed us to establish a new franchise that we can use for years to come," Beaumont added, which ought to give those Resident Evil slackers something to think about. Come on, what's happening with number five?
Real Time World's Crackdown probably won't be coming to Germany. The official rating company in Germany, USK, hasn't given a rating to Crackdown, plus some online German gameshops like Amazon have deleted Crackdown from their assortiment.

This is not the first time that an Xbox 360 game has been banned from Germany. Gears of War and Dead Rising haven't seen light in Germany either. Microsoft hasn't responded to this news, yet.

The game will be released in US and other European countries on February 23. Plus there will be a demo available on January 18th.

The report reveals that throughout 2007, Capcom expects to publish 6 new titles on the Xbox 360 and it expects them to sell 2,250,000 copies.

As soon as we learned about this number, we asked ourselves which games those six titles could be. We only counted three: Lost Planet, Resident Evil 5 and a Dead Rising sequel. What could the other three titles be?
It would make sense after Lost Planet and Dead Rising that were both Xbox 360 exclusive.
More about this rumour and some other nice rumours (Just Cause 2 has green light from Eidos and Konami pushing to get MGS to Xbox 360) by clicking the link below.

Despite the on-going debate currently raging in the forums as to which game is better, the general concensus, according to the charts at least, is that PES 6 is the champion, finally overtaking FIFA for the first time in, well, ever.

After less than one week of the games being released, there is a clear winner, for week one at least. PES outsold Dead Rising "with ease", though FIFA "easily" held on to 2nd place. And before you all go screaming blind that I'm being overly biased and missing the obvious fact, I am aware that Dead Rising was released on only one platform, not the three that PES was, hence PES easily beating Dead Rising. Nonetheless, it shows just how many it has sold.

The release of Pro Evolution Soccer 6 (aka Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2007) has seen Konami finally overtake Electronic Arts' FIFA series as the most popular soccer action game in the UK. The game experienced more than 23 percent more sales than the recent FIFA 07, despite being sold on significantly less formats.

Despite this, sales for the PlayStation 2 version were slightly below that for Pro Evolution Soccer 5, with the difference being made up by the Xbox 360 version. Despite controversy over excised content, compared to the PlayStation 2 game, the Xbox 360 version recorded the highest first week sales of any 360 game so far in the UK ¿ easily beating previous record holder Dead Rising.

A few months ago there was trouble over Dead Rising in Germany, getting into trouble for its excessive violence. Now it appears that Epic's upcoming horror-shooter, Gears of War, will be banned from the German market.
German USK, responsible for videogame ratings, refused to give the game a rating, despite several submissions from Microsoft. Microsoft and Epic decided not to make a less-violent version for the German market because it would "fundamentally change the gameplay", resulting in compatibility issues with different versions on Xbox Live.
It is an exclusive for a largely unpopular American console. And, it looks like Dead Rising is going to be a hit in Japan.

While sales of Capcom's gory zombie-killer Dead Rising have done remarkably well here in the United States, even with a Mature rating from the ESRB, in Japan where the game was recently released, copies of the games are hard to find.

As a result of recent changes to the rating system for videogames used in Japan, sales of Z-rated games - those that can only be sold to persons 18 years old and above - are being strictly enforced. Prior to the changes, ratings were used merely as guidelines to inform purchasers of the intended audience of a game.

Microsoft have released a list of games that will be featuring at this year's TGS. There are not many surprises, apart from the omission of the game everyone wants to see: Halo 3.

There are also a couple of games I have not heard of, such as Super Robot Taisen XO, so it will be interesting to see exactly what that turns out to be. Of course, it could be a Japanese title, since the event is in Japan, and might be an attempt to try and sell more 360s to the unwanting Japanese public. The games are as follows:

MotoGP'06 (THQ)
WWE 2007 SmackDown vs. Raw (THQ)
The Outfit (THQ)
Vampire Reign (AQ Interactive)
A Ressha de Gyouku HX (Artdink)
Dead Rising (Capcom)
Lost Planet Extreme Condition (Capcom)
Winning Eleven Serie (Konami)
Operation Darkness (Success)
Project Sylpheed (Square Enix)
Tomb Raider Legend (Eidos)
X-Men The Official Game (Spike)
Prey (Spike)
Full Auto (Sega)
Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega)

Xbox 360 software has enjoyed one of its best weeks of sales since its launch in the UK this week, with three exclusive titles in the top five. The second new Xbox 360 number one in as many weeks is Capcom's Dead Rising ¿ the company's first number one in the UK for five years. The title has become the fastest selling Xbox 360 to date in the UK, beating both Ubisoft's Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter and last week's Saints Row.

Capcom: "Due to the amount of text and the size of the patch necessary to change the text, a patch isn't possible for this issue," said the company. "We had asked the team if it was even possible but ... due to the scope of what a patch would need to cover, it wasn't possible."

Capcom, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today announced its plans to expand the marketing campaign for Dead Rising, the company's first game for Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft. The company has planned an additional $3 million national television campaign that matches the one which just concluded, doubling the overall scope of the program. The new TV campaign will support the overall extensive marketing initiative, which includes print and online advertising as well as radio promotions and retail partnerships. Dead Rising has already shipped more than 500,000 units within its first two weeks of launch and is the fastest selling next generation title for a Japanese publisher.

Capcom is no stranger to the zombie genre of videogames. Their series of Resident Evil games has been by far the most popular zombie franchise in the history of gaming, with the latest installation, Resident Evil 4, earning huge amounts of acclaim from critics and gamers alike (despite technically not having any zombies in it). They've already announced Resident Evil 5 for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, but in the interim, they've cobbled together a nifty little next-gen zombie-killing game called Dead Rising.
How many ways can you kill a zombie? We have no idea, but the brilliantly blood drenched Dead Rising offers a multitude of amusing and gloriously gratuitous methods to dispatch, disembowel, dismember and decapitate decomposing deadweights. Chainsaw? Lawnmower? Scyth? Bowling ball? Cactus? It's your shout.

With Dead Rising's development deadline now dead and buried - it's out for Xbox 360 tomorrow - we scrawled 10 bite-size questions on a hunk of rancid flesh and sent ...
I loaded the menu ok, but when I tried to start the game, it smacked me with a disc read error, despite being a pristine new copy. The usual "clear the cache' tricks didn't help. Yesterday afternoon, the company confirmed to 1UP that their zombie thriller was optimized for high-definition television sets, confirming suspicions from gamers, and explaining the problems standard definition users have been experiencing.
"Unfortunately Dead Rising was optimized for High Definition TV's. Due to this, the font in the game might be difficult to read on standard definition TV's," the company said in a brief statement.

Capcom has also released a series of recommendations for gamers with small text syndrome:
The text on the screen was obviously formatted for users already having entered the HD Era, and not ones waiting for a more reasonable price, because the font size is essentially unreadable at its current miniscule size, even with component cables.
Internet forums are flaming away on how the in-game's text are un-readable on normal SDTVs and users are claiming that the game must have been test only on high-def sets. This 'bug' effects nearly every portion of the game as the player cannot read anything in any conversation or receive the games instructions when viewed on a normal TV.
It looks like Capcom is planning on turning Dead Rising - its incredible zombie mashing Xbox 360 action game - into a series, as it's asking gamers what they'd think of a sequel.

It seems you can download locker keys that unlock costumes previously hidden in the game, such as a grandpa costume and more.

Miami Nights Key: Clothes
Casual Key: Clothes
Weekender Key: Clothes
Round Shades: Clothes
Burgundy Wine Key: Clothes
Pink Paparazzi Key: Clothes
Man In Black Key: Clothes

All files are 108KB, the only thing they do is add a key to your inventory which allows you to unlock the item. Extra downloadable video's Webisode 1 to 6 is available on marketplace in USA.
Is Dead Rising a zombie game, or a GTA-esque, sandbox-style beat ‘em up with wall-to-wall undead, or a mash up of dozens of different gameplay styles that are more than the sum of their parts? You would do the game right to call it pretty much all of the above. But one thing that Dead Rising isn't is a mere open-world zombie-killing simulator. That's apparent in its highly structured storyline which remains wonderfully true to every single serious-toned zombie flick that George Romero ...
