Punch-Out!! – exclusive boxer reveals!

Pics and videos of Piston Hondo, Great Tiger and two re-imagined favorites

Words: Brett Elston, GamesRadar US

The Mario and Zelda series are unmatched in sales and popularity. Metroid, Star Fox and F-Zero all have devoted bases that’ll wave the franchise flag whenever needed. Punch-Out!!, on the other hand, has only two console games to its name, yet potentially carries more fond memories and nostalgia than any other Nintendo franchise. Everyone knows Punch-Out!! and can fondly recall time spent pounding goofy boxers into oblivion.

That’s why we’re happy to reveal four new additions to the upcoming Wii sequel. We’ll have a full-blown review coming up in a few weeks, but for now, take a look at these familiar faces.

Piston Hondo

Back from the original NES game, Piston’s gone through a minor name change. We asked about the difference (he was originally Piston Honda) and it sounds like Honda itself might’ve factored in the alteration. Nothing like Mr. Honda called Mr. Nintendo to complain, just some preventative swapping.

Above: Hondo’s boxing behavior is extremely similar to his NES form

Above: He’ll mix up sweeping uppercuts with these faster jabs. Watch out!

Above: Proper punches will knock little sushi items out of his head

Great Tiger

Great Tiger is another holdover from the original. His tricks include disappearing and reappearing elsewhere in the ring, as well as a duplicating fake-out move where he tries to cross you up. Check it in the video below.

Above: The aforementioned duplication move. Which way’s he gonna go?

Above: Every Punch-Out!! boxer has a “tell.” Guess what his is?

I never played the NES version except on emulators, and I don't own a Wii (Not something I lose a lot of sleep over, to be honest), so I'll have to wait til' a friend buys it to play it. Looks pretty decent though.

Funny how I just watched a top ten Screwattack list on an competitor's website who shall remain nameless called the Top Ten Pussie Ass Bitches.

#2 was whoever lost to Glass Joe.

Yes, but does it encourage you to 'Join the Nintendo Fun Club today, Mac!'.

I CERTAINLY HOPE SO.

To unoriginal...you kind of gave away the competitors name in the name of the list there didnt you?

What kinda cheap shot was that? P. H"o"ndo bows and the player nails him with a left jab? For shame.
Looks like a fun game, but it must be demoralizing to have Glass Joe knock a player down; especially with that background music.

"yet potentially carries more fond memories and nostalgia than any other Nintendo franchise."

Except, y'know, MARIO.

Thank you Brett-Bot! I was hoping to find out who else was going to be in this game. Us old school NES gen need to know who we can expect!
Ramijiman  - 6 months 3 days ago
It looks great!! the only thing that worry me is the controls can't you just play with the wii remote sideways like a NES ?
Ensoul  - 6 months 2 days ago
@ Ramijiman: I'm pretty sure I saw another video somewhere else that showed a person playing in the "traditional" way.

I hope they bring Mario back as the ref, or make him a hidden opponent!!! How bitchin would that be, Little Mac vs Super Mario (he would have to be Super Mario so he's big enough, Mario is so teeny). Boxing is about the only sport that Mario hasn't had a game based around.
