Wii U power debate: Iwata swears it will keep up with next-gen. Microsoft says 'it's a 360'

Well, which is it?

Phil Spencer, Corporate President of Microsoft Studios, has said in an interview with GamesIndustry that Nintendo is "building a platform that is effectively a 360 when you think of graphical capability", referring to the Wii U. But Nintendo's President, Satoru Iwata, while not entirely disagreeing with the core sentiment, has told investors that Wii U will not be left behind in the next generation, because the graphical differences will not be so great. So which is it?

Surely the almost seven-years-old Xbox 360 wouldn't be able to keep up with the next generation? Isn't that the whole point of a new generation of hardware? And yet, we've seen Wii U in action. We've played it, we've enjoyed it and we want one yesterday. But the demos of (the admittedly unfinished) ZombiU and Batman: Arkham City that we've seen with our very eyes look sub-Xbox 360 quality, or at least approximate to it. And none of them were running at 1080p.

Above: Oh, Wii U - how next-gen are you? And can we put a different game in, please?

Iwata's exact words to investors were: "Other companies might launch a next-generation console with more power, but we don't necessarily think that the difference between the Wii U and such consoles will be as drastic as what you felt it was between the Wii and the other consoles because there will be fewer and fewer differentiators in graphics."

He has a fair point when he talks about the gap between this gen and next and how it will not be as pronounced as that between the essentially Gamecube-powered Wii and the PS3/360. Games like Watch Dogs could probably run on an Xbox 360 with all the sliders turned down a bit. But how long is that going to last?

Above: Could Wii U run this? A version, yes. Certainly better than Wii runs Call of Duty...

He told the very same investors: "We cannot promise that the Wii U will never be excluded from multiplatform software for eternity, but we can at least assure you that the Wii U will not have such a big difference as the Wii had in comparison to how, on other platforms, developers could expect very different graphic capabilities of generating HD-applicable high-resolution graphics."

"Naturally some consumers are very sensitive about such a small difference in graphics, so that we will make efforts to make the most of the performance of the Wii U to keep up with technological innovations and not to make the system out-of-date soon."

Are you convinced? Can Nintendo squeeze enough juice from the system to keep it viable for multiplatform games well into the next generation? Or will it just become port-central for the best of the outgoing generation that never got a chance to run on Wii? Let us know in the comments.

Couldn't really care about graphics, I just want better AI, faster load times, quicker downloads and, most of all, BETTER GAMES!

well if they significantly improve on the paltry 256mb of ram from this generation, then they will be heading in the right direction. i feel Nintendo is heading the way of Sega, in the sense that soon they may find themselves out of the console race altogether (even though in Sega's case, the world was not ready for the Dreamcast, as oppose to the wii and wii u being sub-par in capabilities apart from their gimmicks) and using all of their 1st party properties for licensing deals. You do not need modern hardware to run any 1st party nintendo games, but when it comes to multi-platform, no one will pick the wii u version over the next gen consoles unless that tablet control provides for some drastic game changing features.

While graphical power alone doesnt win a console war, I can't help but worry the Wii U is going to get left behind again. Call it a hunch.

I am willing to shell out the cash if Nintendo can promise this will be at least relevant for a decade or sometime around that. This idea seems really cool and, regardless of the whole people taking other's ideas, it would be awesome if the other consoles could do this with the whole extra screen thing. Best Gamecube gear was that screen you had on the system itself. I would like to see more of this.

Who would you trust? The company that's MAKING THE DAMN CONSOLE, or the company that's competing with it and probably doesn't know the specs? Maybe Ninty's talking out of their ass. But they're talking to investors, which people don't normally talk to out of their ass.

Pikmin 3 and Zelda. Nintendo take my money already!!!!

It's Nintendo! They've been practically going it alone now for 10 years, third parties be damned. This means that the best-looking versions of Mario, Zelda, Mario Kart and Smash Bros. will be found on the Wii U, and the rest doesn't matter. I'll never own a Nintendo console ONLY, but I'll always own Nintendo consoles as long as they're making great first party software. And am I the only one who thinks Watchdogs isn't that amazing to look at?

I still believe that they cannot compete with microsoft and SONY

Despite all the "hardcore" games they are putting on it the main group buying the wiiU will still be casual gamers. The Wii cannot compete power wise with the current generation but sold ridiculous amounts of units. The WiiU is probably of a similar power to the 360 but will probably be able to keep up with the next gen consoles in terms of sales due to its wider, casual audience coupled with the big nintendo fans and Im sure many people will buy one to have all the consoles or because they are curious to how it will play.

I want to know what sony thinks since mircosoft has the wiiu figured out.

Nintendo have the quality and the bank balance to make sure even an underpowered Wii U will be a success. I can't help but feel they're slightly barking up the wrong tree though - but damnit you've got to love the idealism. Unless I find a bag of money I think I'll be opting out of this one. Come the digital distribution revolution though I'll sure as hell be subscribing to the Nintendo channel.

They seem to always avoid or sidestep the main question of "How powerful is it?", which worries me
  • PhantasyPopStar - July 4, 2012 9:40 a.m.

i think microsoft are just worried. nintendo, yet again are gonna wup them again with inferior tech. the wii succeeded because it was the best console with the best games. and it succeeded without CoD. almost godly. i have no doubt it'll shit on whatever shitbrick MS releases next. Sony isn't even worth mentioning. except to point out how pointlessly pointless mentioning them is.

    I want to believe...
  • shawksta - July 4, 2012 9:56 a.m.

Pfft, of course Microsoft is gonna throw them off. Nintendo threw them off when they said they wouldnt charge for normal service. They seem to forget just how "Last Gen" PS3 and 360 Started out on launch looking like PS2 and Xbox, the Wii U is launching with close if not, Better than PS3 and 360 which means the Wii U still got lots of potential, and overtime will get much better.
  • D0CCON - July 4, 2012 10:04 a.m.

With the best games? How exactly? Wii gets 1, maybe 2 great games a year. PS3 and 360 often get 1, maybe 2 great games a month (and in November, in a week).

Fanboy much? All 3 systems are successful. Each has strengths and weaknesses.
  • PhantasyPopStar - July 4, 2012 10:35 a.m.

wii sports! wii fit! wii play! the conduit!(360 graphics beaten down by the wii) rock band! wii music! metroid other m! my aquarium! just to name a few.. far more fun than repetitive shooting and.. well.. repetitive shooting, which is all the xbox is.
  • PhantasyPopStar - July 4, 2012 10:40 a.m.

and the fact the controller is basically a tablet! everyone want's a tablet so we're all gonna buy it anyway. cos whenever nintendo revolutionize (the wii and undoubtably wii u) people know they're right and they fork out. the wii wasn't a massive success because of the non existent "casual market" it was because of us wanting to be cool. which the wii (and in turn the wii u) was/will be!
