What's Shigeru Miyamoto's favorite Mario game?

Super Mario World, the first Mario game to break free from the NES's limited hardware, is the one that the character's creator will forever hold as his crowning achievement.

Miyamoto gave that answer to USA Today in an interview, saying that Super Mario World "included, of course, all the action you saw in Super Mario Bros., but it also had the map features, so it also had that element of players having to think about where they were going and what they were going to do next."

He also added that the team behind the project was extremely talented. Many of them went on to become producers and directors, he said.

The game, originally released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, is a favorite of many Mario devotees. It provided a unique and addicting gameplay style, and its visual presentation was colorful and brilliant - a huge leap forward from the NES titles that proceeded it.

It was also the game that premiered Yoshi, everyone's favorite little dinosaur... thing.

2010 celebrates the 25th anniversary of Mario. The little red plumber has come a long way, appearing in dozens of games, starring in multiple TV shows and a movie, and even getting his own short-lived line of flavors sodas.

If he STILL considers it the best, because it was such a turning point, why bother making Mario 64, Sunshine, all the Parties and sports games, Donkey Kong remakes, and the Galaxies? Is Miyamoto just trying to squeeze as much as he can from the plumber's dry teats??? If so, he should have moved on to another character a long time ago.

@510BrotherPanda Just because a franchise has a lot of games and expansions doesn't mean it can't reach new horizons... just look at Guitar Hero. ;) SMW is definately one of my favorite Mario Games, second only behind Super Mario Sunshine (you heard me right, I said Super Mario Sunshine). Miyamoto is one hell of a programmer, hats off to you Miyamoto-san.

@510BrotherPanda I would also add that although I love both 3D and 2D platformers, they are VERY different types of game. For example, 2D are inherently linear, and therefore are more about precision and completing the challenges before you than exploration. Bottom line, I love both 3D and 2D Mario games and think that they are different enough that they can easily coexist. And although I share your objection to the spinoff games, I don't think I understand why you would dislike Miyamoto making more Mario games. When did more of a good thing become such a problem? If you're tired the style of gameplay the games offer, couldn't you just not buy them? A lot of people like me play every Mario entry, but I certainly don't think others have to, so it's win-win, right?

The correct answer for this is "Super Mario Bros". It has the best replay value of any of them. Making speed runs in SMB never gets old because it is so easy to do; it can be done with just a little time to spare. Other games you have to have a lot of time to do anything with.
