The Top 7...Big Bosses

Ah, bosses! How we love their layered life bars, cheap super-attacks and exposed weak points. It's the rules that games have to have them, so in this roll-call we look at seven titans that really threw their weight around.

These are some of the biggest of the big, deserving of their boss status by barely fitting on the screen, let alone playing unfair.

7.  The Hydra, God of War, (PS2, 2005)

In a game that does everything big, you expect some mighty bosses, but what you don't expect is one to show its gigantic face - well, three faces - five minutes into God of War's opening stretch.

You're constantly reminded of the Hydra's presence throughout the level and yet you'll probably still stifle a nervous whimper when you clamber up the final shipwreck for the showdown.

Above: With two more heads and massive mouths where this one came from, the Hydra just won't quit.

Luckily, avenging badass Kratos is made of sterner stuff and doesn't raise an eyebrow in the process of prising his way out of its jaws, nailing two of its heads to the deck and impaling the final one on a broken mast.

Dude. Shadow of the Colossus was just plain /Win/. In every sense of the term. You'd think from the start "Oh Jeez! It can only get bigger!" But then they throw all sorts of sizes at you, and all you have is a Petty Sword and a Bow. Not including the Time attack stuff. That stuff is damn near impossible at that too. I still think God of War has done bigger than the Hydras, though that's technically what started it for the God of War Series. The Colossus of Rhodes was just plain Huge. You walked around /inside of it/.

Somebody hasn't play Sin and Punishment, where the final boss is a freaking planet and you're not the one who has to worry about getting attack. Turns out the planet earth has hp that needs protecting.

Great article. I agree with most of these. I completely love that Shadow of the Colossus claimed the top of the list. It at least got first in something. I loved playing that game. First night I brought it home, put it in and started playing, I was amazed. Then I fought the first colussus and my jaw dropped. Throughout the game, the way it gave you vertigo with some of the larger bosses and the way they tried swinging you around made my pound. Great game. I thought the Colossus of Rhodes (from God of War II) was going to be on here to be honest. That was a huge dude! Or, even better, one of the titans. That guy was big too.

  • EvanesceExotica - February 14, 2009 3:23 a.m.

You can't forget the "Destroyer" from The Legend of Spyro: "The Eternal Night". That thing was HUGE. Another one of those bosses that are an entire level all by themselves.
