The glorious Earth Defense Force 2017 is getting a sequel, EDF Insect Armageddon

In the immortal words of M. Bison, "YES!". The cult classic Earth Defense Force 2017 is getting a sequel, %26ldquo;Insect Armageddon%26rdquo;, and this time it%26rsquo;ll be showing up on PS3 as well. Expect tons of guns, tons of bugs and the closest thing you'll get to pretending you're playing a Starship Troopers video game.Unless you're playing, you know, the Starship Troopers video game.

For those that never played it, EDF 2017 was a budget title released for Xbox 360 way back in 2007, with graphics that look like it was released on the PS2 in 2002. The game%26rsquo;s story is a harrowing tale of redemption involving a dude shooting millions of huge ass bugs in the face until they%26rsquo;re dead. Despite its bad graphics, worse physics, laughable voice acting, and terrible level design, the game is insanely fun. Hugegroups of 400-foot-tall ants constantly swarm towards you as giant alien UFOs blow up the city and warp in more bugs. EDF is a very simple, stripped down affair; you have a huge selection of guns and you need to kill literally thousands of bugs. That%26rsquo;s pretty much it.

Above: Spider leg perspective fail, but awesome otherwise

Insect Armageddon's press release mentions a new six-player Survival mode, online Campaign co-op support for up to three players,150 weapons, and four upgradeable armor sets. While we%26rsquo;ve only got one screen shot and box art to go off of, but things are looking good. Jetpacks? Yes please. If the box art isn%26rsquo;t just pulling our leg it looks like there might be aerial combat with flying insects this time around, as opposed to just circle strafing on the ground while blasting into the air as before. No word yet on whether or not Insect Armageddon will follow in its predecessor's budget title footsteps, butwe'd gladly pay full priceif it's even half as fun as the first.

Earth Defense Force Insect Armageddon is scheduled to arrive in Spring 2011 for Xbox360 and PS3.
