The development of a Halo movie has been churning around the rumor mill for years, but according to hints lifted from a recent French press release for the new Halo: Cryptum book, a filmic adaptation may soon be coming our way from none other than Steven Spielberg.
Roughly translated, the release (above) indicates Spielberg's Dreamworks studio will spearhead the production of a Halo movie for a 2012 release. It does not, however, clarify what role Spielberg will play in its development.
It's possible the presser was cobbled together by unconfirmed reports, or is just flat-out wrong. What's worth noting is that Steven Spielberg's name has been attached to a Halo film for over year, and despite a few misfires, Microsoft is still intent on taking its hit FPS to the big screen.
“There will be a Halo movie,” said Microsoft's franchise lead Frank O'Connor in an early 2011 interview with New York Videogame Critics Circle. “We don’t need a movie. But we’d like a movie. We’d like the moms of gamers to see the movies because they would love our characters. Maybe we’ll even fund it ourselves.”
True or not, odds are we'll see either formal announcement or a PR retraction in the near future.
