StarCraft II sells massively well, industry responds with sarcastic expressions of surprise

"Oooh, hooow surprising," said one gamer

Words: on September 1, 2010

If you haven’t bought a copy of StarCraft II yet, you’re a liar. A big, cold hearted liar. How do we know that? Well, because Blizzard released the first month’s sales numbers, that’s how. Now, stop trying to argue with us and own up to the fact that you, like the rest of us, are enjoying this damn finehighly moddable game.

Above: One of us, one of us, one of us…

Topping out at 3 million copies sold the world over and becoming the fastest-selling RTS of all time, Blizzard’s latest masterpiece is proof positive that if you build it, the nerds will come. 1 million copies of the game were moved during its first day alone, rounding out to 1.5 million units sold in the first 48 hours.

"We appreciate all the enthusiasm that players around the world have shown for StarCraft II," said CEO and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment Mike Morhaime.

"It was important to us to deliver an overall gameplay experience that was accessible, balanced, and fun, and it's been gratifying to see how strongly the global community has already embraced the game."

Let’s be honest, if Blizzard would poop on paper, take video of the act, and encode it to a Blu-Ray disk we’d embrace it. But we’re happy with StarCraft, just to be clear.

Thing is, Blizzard has no choice but to keep as similar to the original as possible (case in point, allowing exploits like Mutalisk stacking to still work in this version). There's too much invesetment (emotional, monetary, etc.) in the original to risk changing the formula up especially when you consider its status as a sport in Korea.

@friendlyfire : couldn't agree more...CoH just seems so much more progressive in the RTS genre...i watched my friend geek out over SC2 at launch, and i've watched him play it quite a bit...shit puts me to sleep...new units? better graphics? yawn...gameplay has barely changed in over 10 years...that's not trolling, it's the cold, honest truth...i give them some credit in trying to mix things up in the campaign, but...yawn...
oh, and my friend who geeked at launch? he's already put it down... and replaced it with SILENT HUNTER 3!

I remember all the people that said they weren't going to get it when they heard it will be in three parts. I'm glad it's in three parts (don't know about the multiplayer though/how they'll handle that) because Blizzard did a quality job telling Raynor's story, I expect nothing less for the next two pieces. I absolutely loved that you flew around in the Hyperion researching and unlocking more abilities for your structure and units. The choices you could make and the interaction with your ship mates added relationships with your campaign playtrhough. Don't get me started on the hundreds of custom maps that will be played online as well.

Not interested in the slightest. I still haven't seen a RTS that beats Company of Heroes.

Even though I don't have the game, I think it would be reasonable to say that it would be somewhat difficult to even compare StarCraft II with those games you have mentioned, mostly because the genres are completely different.

But anyways, I want this game. I just don't have the money to get it.

@ Weker -- Yes, exactly the same. Play it first next time or stay in your hole, troll.

Also, specifically on the article, it's testimony to how well World of Warcraft has done that you can see "3 million copies sold" in this short amount of time and still reflexively think, "Yeah, but hasn't WoW sold, like... 11 million? At least?" Don't want to undermine Blizzard's achievement with SC2, either. 3 million copies for an RTS is damned impressive.

Game isn't at all like Broodwar, none the less a great game. Easier on the eyes but less of a spectator sport like the old game. Not suprised in the least at Blizzards sales, considering how sucessful every franchise they have is.
