Star Wars 8 will reveal who Rey's parents are

The mystery of Rey's parentage in Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be at an end in Star Wars 8, according to her actress Daisy Ridley. In an interview with Vulture, Ridley responded to several questions about her character's origins, including one popular theory that she's descended from Obi-Wan Kenobi: "We will see in a year," Ridley said. "Just sit tight on that question."

All we know about Rey's family so far is that they left her on Jakku - a planet best known for having a Star Destroyer crash into it - as a child. Maybe they knew she would become strong in the ways of the Force (also really good with machines) and wanted to hide her far away from the Empire's notice. Maybe they forgot she was using the bathroom at the gas station and took off without her. At least we won't have to wait until Star Wars: Episode 9 to find out!

Ridley also did some quick mental math to address some persistent rumors about Jyn Erso, protagonist of Star Wars: Rogue One, being her mother. “I mean, I think historically it wouldn’t work, because she is … Darth Vader is there …  so she would ultimately be my great-grandma; no, she would be my grandma." So probably not, though "it could happen, especially in a galaxy far, far away."

Directed by Rian Johnson and starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Laura Dern, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Gwendoline Christie, and Benicio del Toro, Star Wars: Episode 8 will open on December 15, 2017.

I got a BA in journalism from Central Michigan University - though the best education I received there was from CM Life, its student-run newspaper. Long before that, I started pursuing my degree in video games by bugging my older brother to let me play Zelda on the Super Nintendo. I've previously been a news intern for GameSpot, a news writer for CVG, and now I'm a staff writer here at GamesRadar.
