Sony: The Last Guardian development continues (slowly)

Sony has been somewhat vague as to the status of Team Ico's The Last Guardian ever since its original director Fumito Ueda traded his full time gig for a contractor role. That was until yesterday, when Sony boss Shuhei Yoshida took a minute out of his 2012 DICE. appearance to assure 1Up the game was still happening... just not anytime soon.

“The project has been making progress, but slow progress,” Yoshida explained. “So that's tough, but we haven't changed any focus. It's still a really important project and a vision we want to see realized, and Fumito's vision is really causing a very difficult challenge for the developers, so there's some scrapping and rebuilding -- iteration in the process. That's why [it's taking so long].”

Yoshida also confirmed Uedo was still very much involved in the development of The Last Guardian despite his change of position, adding, “Absolutely. Absolutely. He comes in every day, and he's probably one of the people who works the longest hours.”

The Last Guardian was first introduced by Team Ico back in May 2009 after years of speculation, and has spent the last few years teasing gamers with promises of Ico-ish adventures and monster eagles since. The last we heard, Sony was anticipating a late 2012 release, but we think a 2013 appearance is more likely. That's not to say we wouldn't be happy to be proven wrong.

Ok i dont get it, why the fuck is this game taking so long to make? what's so special the engine is not really impressive, and that's what takes the longest to build in a game, the graphcis so what's the excuse?

Haha, this is so misguided I don't even know what to say. It takes a lot to make a game fun. If a decision they made early on in the development cycle is coming back to bite them, then they either release a bad game, or take more time and redesign it.

Think I'm just going to stop researching about this. If it comes out, fantastic, but I'm getting a bit tired of developers making me beg for crumbs of info lol. The next time I click on an info page is when a writer has the title, "The Last Guardian confirmed to come out tomorrow!" High expectations, but still after so many years of me searching I'm sure they don't mind one last Ico fan-boy.

Hopefully this doesn't become the new Duke Nuke'em Forever, though if it is in developmental hell, I'm sure it will still come out as a high quality title.

The good news is that if it does become that, it won't be as outdated and tacky at the Duke when Forever finally released. Ueda's games are much more timeless because of the art and design. The bad news is that if it the new Duke, we have to wait for the PS5.
