With the great success of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, there's no doubt Nintendo is looking at other classic games that might work if bumped into the third-dimension for the 3DS. The next obvious step would be Majora's Mask, as it ran on the same engine as Ocarina and would likely make for an easy transition.
But during an interview with Skyward Sword producer Eiji Aonuma, we learned that Miyamoto is tinkering with something even more interesting.
During the interview we asked Aonuma if there was any chance that he would ever consider making another 2D Zelda game. While he hasn't been looking into it personally, he confirmed that Miyamoto has. "Well actually, even Mr. Miyamoto himself has been talking recently about going back to the 2D Zelda games," he said, "in particular the ones that were designed with multiple levels to the world like A Link to the Past, and taking those 2D graphics and recreating them in 3D so that you could get a sense for the depth of those worlds. That's something that might be interesting to do, so I would say there might be a possibility of something like that in the future."
Article continues belowWhile it's far from a confirmation, the fact that they're even experimenting with it is interesting. It also makes sense - beyond being one of the most beloved games in the series, A Link to the Past often played with Link exploring dungeons and castles that had multiple levels of viable depth, making it a prime contender for a 3D re-release.
If this is, indeed, in the works we'd expect to hear more in the near future, with an E3 unveiling being likely. Maybe then we'll find out if it's actually in development, and whether or not it would justify a full-blown re-release, as was the case with Ocarina, or if it would be sent out under the 3D Classics banner is another question entirely.
