Play The Secret of Monkey Island with us - GamesRadar's Game Club for September

Last month we introduced GamesRadar's Game Club, a monthly feature/podcast where we invite you to play a classic game you may have missed (or just want to revisit). The first game on the list was Beyond Good & Evil, and we're continuing the feature with...

The Secret of Monkey Island!

That's right! We're playing LucasArts’ classic, pirate-filled point-and-click adventure that started the beloved series. Monkey Island is on our list of the best games ever, and we ranked it as number one on our best point-and-click adventure game list, so we really think you’ll like it.

We’ve made some changes to the Game Club based on your feedback. Most notably, we're only doing one episode at the end of the month instead of playing it weekly, making it much, much easier for you to keep up and play the game along with us.

So, play it with us! You can download The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition on Steam or PSN for $10, Xbox Live for 800 Microsoft Points, or iTunes for $3! It's crazy cheap and you can play it on almost anything, and if you haven't played it, you've missed out on one of the best games of all time. Take this as the excuse you need to play it--that's what we're doing.

Here’s what GamesRadar's Editor-in-Chief, Sophia Tong, has to say about the game that she's played through so many times she lost count: "The Secret of Monkey Island is one of my favorite games of all time. It has everything you would want in an excellent adventure game: great atmosphere, awesome soundtrack, hilarious dialogue, and wacky puzzles. Guybrush might be a bit of a goof, but you can't help but root for the guy who just really wants to be a pirate, I mean, who wouldn't?"

All you need to do is pick up the game, play it with us, and then check back at the end of the month. We’ll be posting a follow-up article and a podcast where GamesRadar's staffers will get together and discuss the ins and outs of the classic game.

And if you don’t like it, well... then... “Look behind you, a Three-Headed Monkey!”

Hmmm...played the HD version before getting an HD TV. Might be nice to play this without having to squint so much. I'm in.

So this is twice now that the Game Club is something that I picked up on this summer's Steam sale. I wonder if GR is trying to tell me something...?

I missed out on the last Game Club and SMI has been in my backlog for a while, so I'll definitely be doing this!
  • TanookiMan - September 7, 2012 4:50 p.m.

Super excited about this, haven't played the newer version of SMI. Been looking for an excuse to play videogames with my girlfriend (she likes Big Fish click puzzle games) so we're going to do this together!

Bought this and LeChuck's Revenge when it was on offer on PSN. I dabbled in it for a bit but probably didn't even get a quarter of the way through it. This will be a good excuse for me to give it another go. :)

Superb games, I liked number 3 too but it didn't have quite the same charm as the 1st two. The ending parts of Monkey Island 2 actually felt pretty creepy back when I first played it, the atmosphere was perfect.

Monkey island 1 & 2 are still my fav games of all. Such great times competing with my brother with who could finish first. Days before the Internet it felt like quite an achievement too. Beautiful artwork, scripting and soundtrack; which to this day gets the hairs standing up. A classic!

Not that this game is bad, but can we go with a current gen game next month like Mass Effect 2, Saints Row 3, or Fallout New Vegas? Oh and how about RE6 for November? It comes out next month and a lot of people will be playing it.

I think the point of Game Club is to get people to dip a little farther back into gaming, to games that lots of people might have missed, like Monkey Island, due to it not being on consoles, other than Sega CD, which is where I played it, until recently. Now that we have downloadable versions of older games it's nice to give people a reason to go back, and experience them together. If they went with something this gen, I'd think something like Heavenly Sword would fit better, since most people didn't get a PS3 until long after it was mostly forgotten.

Soooooo, how far do you want to play? IN the first GameClub, I think you guys said to play only to a certain part IIRC?
  • GR_SophiaTong - September 7, 2012 2:37 p.m.

To make it easier on everyone, we'll give you the whole month to play and we'll do a catch up at the end. It was too hard for people to keep up week to week.

Anyone know if the iOS version is worth playing? I'm cheap, but I still want a good experience (not to mention the ability to play at work. SCORE)
  • Alcookie - September 7, 2012 1:26 p.m.

The iOS version is exactly the same as the PC version.
  • ericthesmith - September 7, 2012 1:37 p.m.

    Thanks! Getting it now.

I can't even begin to state how special this game is to me. It pretty much formed my sense of humor as a kid. I'm not a big fan of the animation of the special edition, but the backdrops are gorgeous, and the voice acting is great. It's fun to switch back and forth between the old and new graphics while you play. It really shows how far things have come.
