Scott Pilgrim’s “Blood Mode” cuter than expected

A familiar violent code goes straight to the heart

Words: on August 27, 2010

When Joystiq posted about a newly discovered “blood mode” in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, we could’ve waited a bit to give it a shot. But once we learned that it referenced the infamous Mortal Kombat blood code we typed into the Genesis a billion times over, we ran straight into our capture room like giddy children anxious to get our eyes on the nasty. No more reading was necessary. A, B, A, C, A, B, B (C = X[box]) The results? Far more adorable than we ever could’ve hoped:

Above: "Blood"

“Gory” it most certainly isn’t. Instead of a waterfall of hemoglobins, Scott Pilgrim represents it’s blood-letting with a wet, bursting heart… and we’ll be damned if it isn’t the cutest thing we ever did see! A little disappointing if you go in looking for a gruesome display of pixelated crimson, but it’s still a pretty kick ass little easter egg in a game already packed with classic gaming nods.

No no no, I just meant that the Konami code is the only code I really remember from about 30 years of playing games. I don't think it's in this game.

The Mortal Kombat 'Karnage Kode'(just to be 'kute') for the Sega Genesis was Down,Up,Left,Left,A,Right,Down as in Dullard. Was that the code from the Mega Drive version?

I'm with ThatGuyFromTv in wondering what the classic Konami code does. If nothing, then Ubisoft missed out on the most important old-school easter egg game reference there was and as such has failed us all.

This is awesome. The game is awesome, frustrating at first, but easy to get into! I love how Ubisoft stayed true to the series and got the right people to score the music! It's classic look and feel really fits with the series and the fact that it has cheat codes only makes it feel more appropriate for the Scott Pilgrim series!

Cool. I'm really liking the Pilgrim game, although I haven't beaten it quite yet. So far I've beaten up to (and including) the twins. I'll have to try this mode. Also, the movie is my favourite movie ever.

what does the Konami Code do?

I didn't realize the codes were references to anything, but I wondered if they were. I've never been a great code user, and can't remember any but the Konami code, really. That's why the internet's great, it sometimes tells you what you're missing. Sometimes it just yells at you, though.

If you pretty much enter any iconic vidja game code, it works.

For example, up up down down up up up up from sonic 3 turns all the money into animals.
