Resident Evil 6 to take a wrecking ball to fear and tension by way of six-player co-op? Don't panic yet

Step one: Acknowledge criticisms that your last "horror" game wasn't scary at all, due to too much half-arsed, identity-muddling action and a perpetually present co-op partner/big meaty hindrance.

Step two: Release a far more exciting trailer for your follow-up, showing off proper, full-arsed action and scary, zombie-flooded isolation in equal measure.

Step three: Screw it all up just as everyone is getting excited, by throwing in the monumental clusterf*ck of six-player co-op?

Above: The only horror is the multitude of '90s fringes

I hope not. Christ, I really do hope not. But that's the current rumour going around, after some potential Resident Evil 6 product details popped up on Xbox Live Marketplace last night before being hastily pulled.

Six-player co-op, eight player multiplayer. Them's the details, if indeed the information wasn't posted in error. If that's campaign co-op, then we can wave goodbye to any kind of tension or genuine fear. Let's face it, having just one friend breathing in your ear during a horror game reduces the experience to a nonsense, so having five of the buggers giggling and snorting through the scary bits would be a total disaster.

But there is a lighter option here. We could well just be looking at a mammoth, six-player version of Resident Evil 4 and 5's arena-based Mercenaries mode in addition to the main campaign. The eight-player mode? Possibly even a team-based versus mode inspired by Left 4 Dead. Capcom is all about taking inspiration from western games these days, and a heroes vs. monsters side-game could be a rather storming fit for Resi.

In fact six-player Mercenaries does sound rather more likely than six-player campaign co-op. We've seen multiple potential protagonists in the trailer so far, but their footage seems to put them in settings (and possibly even play-styles) too disparate to indicate a single shared plot-line, surely? Whaddayareckon?

The constant negative speculation on a title that so recently got announced, always baffles me. Also stating that the "tension and fear" of RE:6 will be instantly put to death because of co-op, is an obvious attempt at cashing in on views for the newly slated installment in a popular franchise. Here's an idea, PLAY SOLO if you're so worried about your fellow co-op player ruining your immersion. This is the equivalent of judging the quality of a movie because you're afraid the people in the theater will spoil your experience.

I wouldn't panic until all the facts are in. It might be something you end up wishing they did earlier.

I reeeallly hope the multiplayer is for The Mercenaries. It sounds like more fun than the tacked-on Versus mode and tensionless co-op in RE5 just ruined it for me. I'm a fan of the series and all, but I refuse to finish it. Who knows? Maybe I'll give it a second chance. (Still won't beat RE4...)

All this brought up to me was the kind of cool idea of a survival horror game that was technically co-op by virtue of the fact that it would have multiple people playing, but each one started out on their own path and couldn't communicate to other players (except maybe by an ability to leave notes laying around or something like that). The players would all be working to escape or defeat some sort of horror and players doing well would help out other players (unlocking new areas for them or items). It would be a lot of work to pull off something like that, but it would be pretty cool if set up in some sort of semi-random world so that it was different every time you played, even ignoring the changes your fellow players could unlock. Honestly, I'd like this idea for any level of co-op, even just two players.

I figured that the campaign would be split into three separate parts, one for each character. I thought that the 6 player co-op would be applied to Chris's section of the campaign, it looks like it's going to be more squad-based anyway.
  • jackthemenace - January 23, 2012 1:05 p.m.

I suppose, providing the team-members aren't with you CONSTANTLY- like, they're only there when you choose to be playing in co-op- then people still get all the fear, as long as they play through it first time solo, and if they don't, they're only ruining it for themselves
  • GamerTagsSuck - January 23, 2012 12:51 p.m.

If this was just for the sections with Chris, which seem to place you with some sort of a squad anyways, I'd be... okay with it. I guess.

    I work alone....
  • codystovall - January 23, 2012 12:34 p.m.

although, they match between merc and ashley could be a comedic one. Hes not so good and she is, could be fun. And who knows chris and his squad could be interesting. but Ill prefer leon.

Could be worse...... Resident Evil:Kinect Play resident evil with crappy gestures that work about 35% of the time. Or Resident Wiivil the first E-Rated Resident evil, It has no combat but features Zombie Miis in a wide variaty of minigames including Racoon City Dance party, And Zombie basketball. It also comes with a free copy of dog football :P

If Capcom disallows headphone chatter like From Software did in Demon's/Dark Souls, ramped up the enemy count, instituted 'perma-death' for every player character who would turn into a zombie/ganado/etcetera at the point of death(one with all of that character's weapons at their disposal to boot!)and increased zombie/gamado/B.O.W. population with each player added as in old 4-player beat-em-ups, this could work out just fine.
  • lightrail - January 23, 2012 1:47 p.m.

I think it was called Outbreak.

I hope they keep it out of the campaign. Do they not realize the weakest of the core RE games have been the ones where you have a partner (RE5 and 0)? And the worst parts of RE 4 were by far the bits where you had to look after Ashley. When it comes to RE, I just want to be by myself, with more zombies than I have bullets. I haven't expected to be scared from a RE game since the GC REmake, and just based off the trailer, 6 looks no different. That doesn't mean you can't still enjoy the game, as long as you go into it looking at it as a action game. On a related note, the RE 6 trailer gave me the urge to finally play through that copy of RE 5 I bought for $10 a year ago. Sheva is abysmal. Sometimes she steals ammo as I am on my way to grab it, and I have to go into the menu to get it from her. Other times, she will be out of ammo, and not pick some up off the ground right next to her. Then, after about 5 hours of her being totally worthless, in the middle of a fight I see her grab a zombie from behind and cut its throat. I just wanted to scream, "YOU COULD DO THAT THIS WHOLE FUCKING TIME!?!?" I felt like Jeff Daniels in Dumb and Dumber when he found out that Jim Carrey had an extra pair of gloves on for the whole ride to Aspen.

Holy shit six player mercenaries would be amazing! Although the whole if one player dies it's game over for everyone would have to be changed and the difficulty would need to be cranked up to 15 with that many players.
  • BladedFalcon - January 23, 2012 10:16 a.m.

    Sounds like trolling to me.
  • sirdilznik - January 23, 2012 9:57 a.m.

As long as this is indeed only for a separate Mercs type mode or for a completely separate multi-player campaign then that's fine. Otherwise I say no thank you. I buy a Resi game to play Resident Evil not Left 4 Evil.
  • Icytor - January 23, 2012 9:46 a.m.

Okay. This is not the right direction for capcom to go. Like at all, especially since if they really listned to fans, they know that not alot of people liked Sheva. Granted, If they actually improve the AI maybe it will work by yourself. But I hope to god that this co-op mode is a seperate mode from the real single player. RE5 was actually a good game, but it just stopped having the resident evil feel and tone, and while 4 was like that, it was the first to do it, show a revolutionary control scheme and gameplay style then from other games, and it was actually creepy or scary at times. Pray for emailing capcom about removing 6player co-op. Pray for it.
  • An_Awesome_Guy - January 23, 2012 9:33 a.m.

I thought this was what Raccoon City was for? There's already one action oriented co-op Resident Evil, do we really need another?
