News to warm the hearts of all fans of samurai, gravelly-voiced Frenchmen and hulking great dinosaurs. Capcom has revealed that even in this combo and zombo-obsessed period, the company hasn't forgotten its non-Street Fighter, non-Resi, non-Dead Rising franchises. And with a bit of luck (okay, a lot of luck in Dino Crisis' case), we might see the return of a couple of them. At some point. Cross everything you have!
Capcom's VP of Strategic Planning and Business Development, Christian Svensson, has stated that although both the Onimusha and Dino Crisis franchises have been wandering the wilderness since 2006, discussions on how to resurrect them are ongoing within the big C.
While he admits that Onimusha's sequel sales piled increasingly into the big brick wall of diminishing returns, he reveals that "it's in percolate mode, that is to say, it's not forgotten internally, there are discussions that go on". And while no-one has yet come up with the killer idea that will bring the franchise back proper, we "may see some things of the brand pop up in the future, I can't say what, but there are certainly discussions about it". Onimusha cast members as DLC in Marvel vs. Capcom 3? It's an elephant's trunk-length shot, but here's hoping.
As for Dino Crisis, things are less rosey, but the franchise is similarly far from dead. As a spin-off from the old Resident Evil gameplay model, Svensson admits that DC would need a similarly drastic reboot to that franchose if it were to be successful now. But while "we haven't seen the fire from R&D yet", apparently "There are discussions, Dino Crisis comes up from time to time".
So what do you reckon? Would you like to see either of them back? And if so, in what form? Personally I think the massive overhaul needed for Dino Crisis makes it the more exciting prospect of the two, but how should it be done? Let me know in the comments.
