Remember Onimusha and Dino Crisis? Capcom does too, just about, and more may come

News to warm the hearts of all fans of samurai, gravelly-voiced Frenchmen and hulking great dinosaurs. Capcom has revealed that even in this combo and zombo-obsessed period, the company hasn't forgotten its non-Street Fighter, non-Resi, non-Dead Rising franchises. And with a bit of luck (okay, a lot of luck in Dino Crisis' case), we might see the return of a couple of them. At some point. Cross everything you have!

Capcom's VP of Strategic Planning and Business Development, Christian Svensson, has stated that although both the Onimusha and Dino Crisis franchises have been wandering the wilderness since 2006, discussions on how to resurrect them are ongoing within the big C.

While he admits that Onimusha's sequel sales piled increasingly into the big brick wall of diminishing returns, he reveals that "it's in percolate mode, that is to say, it's not forgotten internally, there are discussions that go on". And while no-one has yet come up with the killer idea that will bring the franchise back proper, we "may see some things of the brand pop up in the future, I can't say what, but there are certainly discussions about it". Onimusha cast members as DLC in Marvel vs. Capcom 3? It's an elephant's trunk-length shot, but here's hoping.

As for Dino Crisis, things are less rosey, but the franchise is similarly far from dead. As a spin-off from the old Resident Evil gameplay model, Svensson admits that DC would need a similarly drastic reboot to that franchose if it were to be successful now. But while "we haven't seen the fire from R&D yet", apparently "There are discussions, Dino Crisis comes up from time to time".

So what do you reckon? Would you like to see either of them back? And if so, in what form? Personally I think the massive overhaul needed for Dino Crisis makes it the more exciting prospect of the two, but how should it be done? Let me know in the comments.

Thing is Capcom aren't anything like the dve/publisher they once were this generation. Unless you're a fighting game(Capcom Vs whoever and SF4)fan or a MH buff this gen has been average at best with great series like DMC and Resi really taking a nosedive amid crap like CTYD, a slew od REmakes and rail shooters for the Wii and nonsense like DV and missed chances like LP and DR. Allied to that the last games in both these series sucked major knackers.. My point remains, and I LOVE DC1 and 2 and Oni 1, 2 and 3, that I just doubt Capcxom's ability to make the games these series deserve right now. I'd love to think they could but I don't see it happeninbg hopw we'd really want it to.

Onimusha needs to come back big, and show who invented the modern hack and slash gameplay all pleople seems to think it was DMC and God of war. Dino Crisis was amazing. it had terror, dinossaurs AND timetravel. how not to love? bring them back!

I would absolutely love to see a new Onimusha!!! It's definitely one of my favorite franchises from Capcom. I really hope it happens soon. As for Dino Crisis, I wouldn't care either way. I have no history with it but if it was done, I would definitely pick it up.

Anybody else wish God Hand would come back?

Oh man the new Dino Crisis would be awesome. Oh and maybe they can do what Resident evil hasn't been able to do right now. Include a dodge button(not pop up quicktime) and the ability to move I think that is a must considering your fighting the world's most historically dangerous creatures. One of my favorite things about DC was I know I clear this area but is it safe feeling. It was just pure survival horror style. What ever they do they should not do the mission style gameplay that RE5 did. It did not feel like RE. The whole point of survival horror is getting screwed. Having to look for a key, figure out a puzzle and travel back in hopes of not being attacked. That was fun. RE5 was run, stop abruptly, gun, repeat. Keep the facilities that added to it. Empty buildings are cool. Don't do DC3 again. No No No. That was a disappointment. Coop would be cool. I know its hard in that type of game. Maybe weasel in drop in and out style or find partners in saverooms. I not sure its hard can't really blame them if they can't figure something out.

Words cannot express how much I want to see these back with a sequel or HD remake.

Th ereal question is will these games be PS2 games or not?
  • egregious - October 19, 2010 4:55 p.m.

Two franchises that arguably have much better premises than either Resident Evil or Dead Rising. Bring 'em (and, you know, make 'em good) on!

Onimusha 3............... Jean Reno........... WHAT A GAME IT WAS.... COME BACK
  • Darkhawk - October 19, 2010 4:08 p.m.

I'm going to be in the minority here, but I'm anti-overhaul for DC. RE4 pretty much ruined the traditional survival-horror model for the foreseeable future. With the exception of the Siren remake, it's all Survivor-Action now, and not particularly scary at all. Wouldn't it be nice if the new Dino Crisis was a slow, well-paced and genuinely frightening horror title?

Onimusha was Capcom's best series in the PS2 days imo. I loved the pre rendered backgrounds and awesome character/baddie designs, tight controls...couldn't relly get into the clunky Resi play of Dino Crisis though. Capcom can continue to give their older games a shot in the arm as far as im concerned because they've been killing it. C'mmmmon Ghouls n Ghosts.
  • PlainLikeVanilla - October 19, 2010 2:33 p.m.

DINO CRISIS!!!!!!!! Please come back, I promise to buy you day 1 no matter what.
  • ryusaki - October 19, 2010 1:52 p.m.

Finally, they realised the insanity of allowing the Dino Crisis franchise to die. I always wanted something like a REmake but for Dino Crisis. Or preferably Dino Crisis 2, which is way way better. It's up to you now, Capcom. Apologise for Dino Crisis 3.
  • Veedot - October 19, 2010 1:33 p.m.

I want Samonosuke back i hate soki in onimusha or at least a character or setting related to the first three onimushas. Never played dino crisis but it looks interesting.
