Raja Gosnell is the man that Sony wants in charge of its live-action/animation blended Smurf pic.
We can sort of understand their choice – he has a lot of experience working with movies that mix real people and animated characters.
It’s just a shame that the experience mostly consists of the two Scooby Doo films and Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Moneymakers to be sure, but hardly top notch entertainment.
Naturally, with an officially announcement comes a typically ‘hilarious’ producer gush, so take it away, Jordan Kerner…
"With Raja coming aboard, we now have a brilliant director who has proven time and again that he has a deft touch in blending the worlds of physical comedy and honest emotion with both live action and photo real animated characters.
Our three-apple-high heroes are in good hands, and we feel absolutely, positively Smurfy to be working with him."
So, what does feeling “Smurfy” actually mean, Jordan?
But back to the matter at hand: the film will, of course, adapt the tale featuring the little blue characters. Originally dreamt up by Belgian artist Peyo in the late ‘50s but became better known through their ‘80s cartoon adventures.
These days, they're pop culture icons, and crop up in the weirdest places, such as Robot Chicken's version of Se7en (above).
The film should be with us by Christmas 2010…
