X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse

Marvel's mutants come to the PSP in a great action-RPG that's slightly marred by some technical glitches

One of a handful of action-RPGs for the PSP, X-Men Legends 2: Rise of Apocalypse is very similar to traditional dungeon crawlers. Instead of warriors and swords or wizards and fireballs, you have solar-powered mutants and optic blasts or telekinetics. The other gaming elements are largely the same; you run around, beat things up, collect items, talk to people, and beat up really large things at the end of each chapter. For the most part, X-Men Legends 2 offers a superior action-RPG experience and it's certainly one of the best comic-book games around. Unfortunately, it's hindered by some of the PSP's technical limitations.

X-Men Legends 2 has the titular characters teaming up with their enemies in the Brotherhood of Mutants. The world's first mutant, Apocalypse, threatens the world to such an extent that two sides are forced to team up. You don't have to be an X-Men fan to enjoy the game, but at the same time there are lots of little things that fanboys will love.

In some cases, the PSP version of the game is better than its console counterparts. There's exclusive content and it's a bit easier to play online. Comic-book fanboys in particular will be pleased with the bonus character. Some gamers might be delighted that Cable is included in the game. He used to be one of the hottest characters around. Hardcore fans will have fun playing as lesser known bonus characters like X-Man and Cannonball.
