Pokemon 2011 Video Game Championships: a recap in photos

Nationals are now over in the 2011 Pokemon Video Game Championships, and win or lose, a delightful time was had by all. As we get ready for the international showdown among the globe's most elite Pokemon trainers at Worlds in August, it's time to reflect on the triumphs and defeats of the tournament thus far.

From the winning teams some obvious trends emerge for popular Pokemon team members - Thundurus, Tornadus, and Terrakion were popular choices as legendaries, while Chandelure, Amoonguss, and Hydreigon held their own as regular Pokemon. As discussed on Bulbanews, this year's tournament was particularly interesting because Pokemon Black/White was released such a short time ago that the competitive battling community is still forming the full picture of proper strategy for this generation. Because of that, the VGCs gave us a lot of information to digest and analyze, and you can study it all for yourself by watching the battle videos for each winning match on the official Pokemon VGC site.

It warms my heart to see pokemon still going strong. I was about 7 when Red/Blue came out, so i was a prime candidate for being in the grips of Pokemania... and i loved every minute of it. Still so, even. Nostalgia is a wonderful thing

    I stand corrected
  • Personamanxx - July 16, 2011 6:58 p.m.

@ rockbottom: Yep, I'm sure. I think some of the confusion has to do with the fact that the video Games were released in Japan a few years before they were in North America. And When the VGs came out in North America the card game hit not much longer after. Or something like that. In any case it's a really common mistake to make.
  • rockbottom - July 16, 2011 6:51 p.m.

Personamanxx You sure. The game was before the cards? That's news to me. Sorry everyone. I was already too old for it when it came out so am happy to be proved wrong on this.
  • rockbottom - July 16, 2011 6:46 p.m.

@ xombiesarelove A hobby of insect collecting that was turned into a HUGE playground trading card craze. That's how it started, like Top Trumps. Every kid in Japan and Europe was into it. The video game came after the cards and the cartoons. Toy first, game later. Like I say, I am very old.
  • Personamanxx - July 16, 2011 6:42 p.m.

@ rockbottom: Just for your information. The Trading Card game was based on the Video game. Not the other way around. It's an easy mistake to make considering that the card game was in a lot of places more popular than the video games ever were. I mean, I never played played any of the video games until after years of playing with the cards.
  • xombiesarelove - July 16, 2011 6:40 p.m.

@rockbottom What trading card craze are you referring too? Pokemon is based on the creator's hobby of insect collecting from his childhood. Pokemon has been around for 15 years, a lot of the older people probably grew up with it.

ha ha ha everyone got a hydreigon lol. man i dont see many volcanoras, those are damn tough man, they can clear teams quite easy wish they could come to South Africa though, id definitely attend
  • rockbottom - July 16, 2011 6:07 p.m.

@ BackwaterRifle "Just because a game doesn't have a teen or mature rating doesn't mean it is strictly for kids." You say, and this is true, but, maybe the fact that it's a game based on a PLAYGROUND TRADING CARD CRAZE does mean it's just for kids! Maybe. Possibly. No? I admit, you're right, I don't understand and am quite happy to be wrong about this. If you like it then knock yourself out. I am very old and very cynical. Sorry.
  • Personamanxx - July 16, 2011 5:33 p.m.

One question. Are Pokemon from previous Generations banned in this Tournament? Or are those teams just what worked out in the end?
  • BackwaterRifle - July 16, 2011 3:42 p.m.

@ Rockbottom I see you don't have a complete understanding of how deep the mechanics built into the game are. Behind the cute monsters you basically have one of the most intense strategic games out there. Just because the game does not have a Teen or Mature rating dosen't mean it is strictly for kids.
  • SparkleDevon - July 16, 2011 2:08 p.m.

I was at the 2010 championship, just the regional, but I'll say, even though I had to wait 4 hours to get in, it was one of my most favourite experiences yet. <3
  • rockbottom - July 16, 2011 11:24 a.m.

Great to see the kids battling away and clearly loving every second of it, but, seriously the guys in the 7th and 8th pictures holding there prizes. You're not 5! Senior division, please. Do they have a senior division at the pass-the-parcel or musical chairs competition. Grow up! Pokemon is for kids, leave it for them to enjoy. If you're too big to go on the Bouncy castle outside then you shouldn't be wanting to enter the tournament inside.
  • NightCrawler_358 - July 16, 2011 10:39 a.m.

Wow that looks like alot of fun! I'm glad Pokemon is still relevant to younger kids. Its great to see events like this after seeing how serious and... adult, tourneys are for games like Street Fighter or MvC.
  • philipshaw - July 16, 2011 10:07 a.m.

Checking this out made me miss Pokemon Monday, it has been only gone 2 weeks but I want it back
  • garfunkling - July 16, 2011 7 a.m.

That little kid at the bottom of the first page. The cute!! its overwhelming.
  • boondocks50 - July 16, 2011 6:24 a.m.

*sigh* i recognize none of these pokemon names
  • Nodoudt - July 16, 2011 5:35 a.m.

    Livin' the dream, right there.
