PAYDAY: The Heist – How to steal $8 million from a drug dealer

We were very impressed with PAYDAY: The Heist when we last played it at E3 2011. The four-player co-op shooter is clearly inspired by Valve’s Left 4 Dead – but instead of coming off as a cheap knock-off, PAYDAY continues to impress, upping the ante for the kind of teamwork required as you break down doors, bust through safes, and make off with loot in epic capers inspired by the development team’s favorite heist scenes in movies.

Check out the latest teaser for PAYDAY, which showcases the “Panic Room” mission. It begins with you and your partners in crime infiltrating a drug dealer’s den to make a large purchase of “product.” It’s all a front to give you and your group inside so you can steal the $8 million dollars of dirty money the drug dealer’s keeping in his high security panic room.

Above: The Panic Room teaser for PAYDAY: The Heist

As with the bank heist on show at E3, everything goes crazy once you and your group officially begin the heist. Guns are blazing, people are screaming, and before you know it, the police have surrounded the building and come pouring in. Throughout the chaos, you’ll need to attach band saws to the roof of the room directly below the panic room as well as on the floor of the room directly above it. Then you’ll need to plant C4 charges throughout the building to loosen the locked panic room, detaching it from the rest of the building. The whole heist climaxes with a helicopter swooping in with a giant magnet to rip the panic room and all its treasures out of the addict-filled tenement as you and your team shoot their way out of the building to escape through the sewers.

Above: You'll have to hold out against the police and the drug dealer's minions while running these band saws. Directly above you in this screenshot is the locked panic room with $8 million

Above: Once you've loosened the panic room with the saws and explosives, you'll need to attach this helicopter's magnet to it

Above: After the magnet's been attached, the helicopter will take off, ripping the panic room straight out of the building. It's time to shoot your way to the escape route in the sewers below

I would certainly appreciate some form of Ronald Reagan mask in this game. Just throwing that out there.

@crumbdunky Doubt it will ever happen, because devs are already making money off DLCs, competition especially when we talk about free mods isn't welcome. Not to mention they will try to rally behind things like how it might increase piracy for the console or whatever.

You know what two things this needs to be REALLY cool on console? Mod support(even if it's just like the support we got for taking things from PC over to PS3 for UT3)and a decent price. To me the 360 versions of the L4D games were just too light on content, too expensive and by lacking the mods which kept a great game fresh on PC it also rendered itself short on any real value. I won't even go into the fact Valve never, at that point, bothered to make their console ports particularly high quality and the performance gap, even for a game which isn't a looker on PC to begin with, was way bigger than other PC to 360 porting devs would be happy with(Bioware got the versions of ME a lot closer around the same time). Thing is even WITH these gripes the 360 versions of those games sold like crazy-sure I felt ripped off paying full retail for a game that cost me less than half that(for the better version WITH the possibility of mods on Steam, but I STILL bought it to pay with my 360 mates and even if the Xbox has more shooter fans thing IS borne out there's still a big market for this on PS3 if done even close to right. If the get this out for less than £20 AND allow/support some importation of mods to PS3it could be massive as, to be realistic, there's possibly a billion different heists ready made to rip off for both the devs and potential modders! If they do what I suggest I honesty would be VERY excited for this one even if it IS another FPS. BTW-I LOVE Valve but it did gall me a little that they allowed a few crappy console ports to sully their image this gen and never really addressed it or apologised except for the PS3 version of tOB-but they didn't make that port and it was so bad ANYONE would have spotted the shortfalls. I just want them to take consoles as seriously as they do PC or just not bother OR get someone else who does care to make their ports. I love them, as I say, but L4D needed apologising as it felt like they were being less than fair with 360 gamers and, at the time, hiding it behind daft anti PS3/PSN outbursts. It just didn't FEEL like Valve OR like how they should be behaving. Whatever, i just didn't ant anyone to think I was blindly hating Valve OR L4D(great game just on 360 not great value for THAT package).

"Let's steal the bank, we'll break into it later." President mask DLC? Recreating the Point Break heists would be so cool.

All I need to hear is inspired by Left 4 Dead.

I really like the idea, should be good fun when it comes out.

Im just gonna forget about this game until you review it. I dont want it to be hyped up.
  • Gameguy94 - July 23, 2011 5:34 p.m.

@ Arkaekt I see what you mean but remember its just a game. Besides, its not like you can carry around $8 million dollars in your pocket.
  • Crypto140 - July 23, 2011 3:35 p.m.

Ripping out the actual panic room?! They have balls, pussies just take the stuff in the room, real men take the room itself.
  • JachAnen - July 23, 2011 10:32 a.m.

First of all, they have to do it fast, or there will be to many 5-0s Second of all, ITS A GAME! If you wan't realism, you pull off that robbery. Looking forward to it, seems awesome.

Yup. Flawed thinking and freakin' awesome. At least the action in this game sounds badass.
  • Arkatekt - July 23, 2011 9:26 a.m.

Am I the only one that thinks bringing in a helicopter to rip part of a building out would cause more problems than it would solve? I mean it's not that easy to get a helicopter nowadays, nor is it very cheap, and it's not often one would see a helicopter hovering over a building for 5-10 minutes and flying off with a room. The police would likely dispatch their own the moment they saw the helicopter, assuming they hadn't already dispatched it. Dunno about you guys, but that part just seems like flawed thinking to me. :/
  • TheIronMaiden - July 23, 2011 5:21 a.m.

I'm actually excited for this game. Seems like a good foundation and a solid type of game for some awesome co-op play.
  • GreasySTEVE927 - July 23, 2011 5:16 a.m.

^ Seriously? Did you read any part of the article or see its title? Or are you just trying to be cute?
  • D0CCON - July 23, 2011 2:55 a.m.

A heist involving clown masks? Is The Dark Knight getting a game after all?
