This is a fucking travesty. I had soooo much fun with the subspace emissary story in brawl.

"You can only truly wow a player the first time he sees [a cutscene]. I felt if players saw the cutscenes outside of the game, they would no longer serve as rewards for playing the game, so I've decided against having them." ...That.. Makes no fucking sense. So instead, you're going to give players no reward then? By that logic, what's the fucking point of making ANY game story, or heck, movies? you can only enjoy them the first time after all, right? >_> Look, if you don't want to make cutscenes for your game, fine, that's your creative choice. But please spare us using bullshit backwards logic such as this? It's insulting. Also, whatever single player modes planned for the 3DS version and even the Wii U one, better have more to them than simply being a glorified arcade or challenge mode, otherwise, Sakurai is only going to come across as cheap in my books.

This should be read "We're WAY behind schedule like all WiiU games and are looking to cut corners". If he really means what he's saying there, he's being WAY to full of himself.

Highly doubt it, considering he personally wrote Smash's and Kid Icarus Uprising's story and is notorious for rewarding people in game, he'll hopefully give us something to look forward to completing. Smash is still early in development, Sakurai's being bombarded with questions even he doesn't know how to answer you gotta feel sorry for the guy

Sakurai isn't the only nor the most important figure in the gaming industry to be bombarded with questions constantly. So saying something incredibly stupid is no justification whatsoever. If he really didn't want to, or couldn't say anything, he could simply keep his mouth shut. That usually tends to work wonders. Note that in my post I'm not immediately condemning the single player like other people here already are. And yes, Kid icarus gave you a lot of reasons to keep playing, but guess what, *GASPS!* That game had a TON of story cut-scenes >_> Like I said, I'm not writing the game's single-player off yet, but unless all there is to it is another glorified challenge mode like Mellee had, or a story mode that's lighter or stupider in story, then this is going to come and bite Sakurai in the ass, hard. What I'm saying is, if he already opened his trap in such a fashion, he better deliver on something that is supposedly "better" or "more rewarding" than cut-scenes or a decent story >_>

I didnt imply he was an important figure. Sakurai gave his reasons, stupid as it is, thats what he believes. He has something against certain story structures, as said in an article, calling them "irksome": http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2013/02/masahiro_sakurai_stories_in_video_games_can_be_irksome Bringing us back to Kid Icarus Uprising where it was an idea to mix story and gameplay in a balance where it doesnt stop you which Sakurai said he didnt like a game doing to him. Back to Smash, his excuse IS stupid, no doubt. But it seems its because he doesnt want smash to fall to what he thinks is a problem with games and story. Its his game so he'll adjust it to what he see's fit. We'll never know till it comes out. Also "Glorified challenge mode like Melee had" Event Matches and Adventure Mode are 2 different things "a story mode that's lighter or stupider in story" Were not getting a story and frankly Subspace was silly to begin with.

Silly as it might have been, it was filled with fanservice which is, frankly, the whole point of a series like Super Smash Bros :P And again... Yes, Kid Icarus had a mix between gameplay and story... A story that was STILL filled with cutscenes. So, if that fits on Sakurai's opinion of a good structure, there is no reason whatsoever to not include cutscenes in Smash.
  • shawksta - July 26, 2013 3:58 p.m.

Yes, it does fill a good structure but it seems Sakurai just wants to avoid it all together in Smash, even if he did just make one of the dumbest reasons ever created. Frankly, as he and others would state, the best thing about going through the entire mode was seeing the various interactions(Dedede b*tch slapping Bowser for example) and fanservice like Mario vs Link. The best thing to come out of it as well as Boss Battles. An apocalypse is gonna happen if Bosses dont return ill say that. The interaction and fanservice is already being presented in a fashion to get hype for the game by the available and upcoming movies for smash. The case being so far with Mario,Link, and Kirby playing Wii Fit, and Megaman basically kicking Nintendo ass. Basically what im trying to say that it seems what people even cared about for the Story mode is already being presented well in the new game. Now to see if it really delivers in the end. But then again your argument in the whole beginning isnt doubting but simply complaining about his reasons, which, Yes, it is -10/10
