Nintendo dates Ocarina of Time 3D, announces Wii Play: Motion, shrugs and says, 'eh'

Nintendo has unveiled its second quarter 3DS and Wii lineup. Its biggest draw? A re-mastered version of a game released in 1998! Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D will be released on June 19. With such a mediocre 3DS launch lineup, we're a little surprised that neither Kid Icarus nor Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D were mentioned. Perhaps they'll come in July?

We don't mean to knock Ocarina of Time 3D, of course. As Nintendo points out, the 3DS version will contain an original "Master Quest," which will feature "revamped puzzles and redesigned dungeons that feature the same graphical and interface upgrades as the main game." Still, it's essentially a remake of a game we played in 1998 - not exactly a big launch draw.

Meanwhile, Wii owners can look forward to a big, exciting, brand new first-party title... Wii Play: Motion! The new Wii Play edition (which apparently now features motion, unlike all those other Wii games) will be released June 13, and will come with a Wii Remote Plus to get Wii owners "twisting, turning and enjoying themselves like never before."

"From catching a gust of wind by tilting an umbrella to fending off garden pests by swinging a mallet, each of the 12 included games will have players smiling wide as they use their Wii Remote Plus controller (or Wii Remote with Wii MotionPlus accessory) in a variety of interesting, sometimes unexpected ways," says Nintendo.

Interesting, sometimes unexpected ways? Woah, calm it down there guys! What are ya, snake oil salesmen? Just give us the straight talk - how is your lineup for the next few months, really?

"Following a tremendous launch for Nintendo 3DS, our roster of upcoming games for Wii and all of our hand-held systems will keep the momentum going strong into summer," said Nintendo of America PR director Marc Franklin. "Games like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and Wii Play: Motion offer exciting additions to some of Nintendo’s most popular franchises, while our third-party partners continue to provide blockbuster gaming experiences for Nintendo systems."

Which third-party titles are those? Nintendo's Wii headliners are heavy hitters like Mystery Case Files: Dust to Dust, Karaoke Revolution Glee: Volume 2 and LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game, and on the 3DS, Nintendo was sure to call out Dead or Alive Dimensions and Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters. Yesssssssssss...

Sorry. We'll quit it with the cynicism. We should have been over this a couple years ago... it's just that Nintendo makes it so easy. Alright, how about this? On the 3DS, Cave Story 3D is out June 28, and if you care, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell 3D is out April 10; and on the Wii, the most notable upcoming game is probably The Conduit 2, which will release April 12.

OK, we feel a little better... wait, what the hell is Transformers: Dark of the Moon Stealth Force Edition 3D? We feel stupid again.

This followed by the news of Starfox hitting June only in Japan, no US date announced yet, makes me think this fall or holiday will be gold.
  • Andyjoe - April 13, 2011 9:22 p.m.

@stuicide: Links Awakening will be on the eshop under the "3D classics" section.
  • BlindMarksman - April 13, 2011 8:06 p.m.

What do you mean "Perhaps Resident Evil The Mercenaries will come out in July? It has already been anounced that it will come out in May.
  • MikeT - April 13, 2011 4:23 p.m.

    Cave Story!! That's it I'm getting a 3DS
  • AntistasMetroid - April 13, 2011 3:03 p.m.

    What up T-Wilde! Where's Lasertime?
  • BurntToShreds - April 13, 2011 2:55 p.m.

But... where are the 3DS' new IPs? I figured that the 3DS would allow developers to flex their creative muscles. Then again, I thought the same thing about the Wii, and only a few third-party devs really tried stretching the limits of that system.
  • Patius - April 13, 2011 2:15 p.m.

    Wait....Blazeblue isn't a good 3rd party game?
  • stuicide - April 13, 2011 10:31 a.m.

Right, cool, but how many times have we already had OoT redone for a console? I would've rather seen Link's awakening redone on the 3DS -Its been awhile (10 years or more) so alot of people havent had the chance to play it, not been redone (to my knowledge) plus its the only quest nintendo have done where Link ISNT FIGHTING Ganon -thats a huge bonus right there. Oot 3d? meh, cool i guess - But LoZ:LA 3d? Then you have my attention.

I'm massively excited about Ocarina, it was my first introduction to the Zelda series and it was a stunning game, just hope the magic is still there. I also hope Nintendo push it with the same chauvinistic tag line of: "Wilst thou save the girl? Or play like one?"
  • Andyjoe - April 13, 2011 3:23 a.m.

I've heard rumors that OoT3D will include the URAZelda content that was cut from the original game.
  • markshell - April 13, 2011 3:16 a.m.

They NEED to make a smash bros 3DS. It would be the most awesomest thing ever.
  • shawksta - April 13, 2011 2:37 a.m.

Im not gonna lie, Wii play was awesome, while the name is kind of retarted Nintendo knows what there doing these days, if its an upgraded version of Wii play that beats the original 10 fold than Great! I highly doubt Nintendo's E3 will suck, we'll see skyward sword and probably get the release date and remember that New Kirby game we saw? they'll probably reveal its full name and god knows what else. Its OCARINA OF TIME were dealing with, WITH MASTER QUEST, while it is the same game we played with the extra feature from GC, wasnt the main problem with OOT that its dated? this should really Boost it up. Plus who knows, there might be more extras than expected! GOD DAMNIT, Its hard to be patient about Paper Mario! I hope they fully show it at E3!
  • metroid2099400 - April 13, 2011 1:42 a.m.

I'm really looking forward to OoT 3D, but for the love of God, when is Paper Mario 3DS coming out???
  • taterboob - April 13, 2011 12:34 a.m.

@GhostbusTyler I'm not really sure why, but SSF43D feels much easier than its console counterparts. Now that I think about it, it's probably the hotkey'd ultras though. Not a good enough reason to spend almost $300 on right now, I'll give you that.
  • codystovall - April 12, 2011 11:15 p.m.

Im glad if e3 sucks, it means this years games are good, next years maybe not but i dont care about next year do i.
  • Charlie0108 - April 12, 2011 11:13 p.m.

    Why so much Nintendo hate?
  • Lionhunter44 - April 12, 2011 11:01 p.m.

I'm waiting for Ocarina of time to be re-released before I buy a 3DS. There is no reason to buy one before because the launch line-up was impeccably weak.
  • Larinah - April 12, 2011 10:40 p.m.

Beat the hell out of Cave Story on my PSP, and now it's thoroughly seated as one of my top 10 games. That being said, I'll probably play the hell out of Cave Story 3D. Other than that though, the 3DS' lineup isn't looking too hot.
  • DEsMONd - April 12, 2011 10:39 p.m.

"Conduit 2, which will release April 12" OMG!!! Today's April 12th!!! (Dashes out to car to go to shops and buy the game)
  • veryweirdguy - April 12, 2011 10:20 p.m.
