Pirates of the Caribbean 5 featurette reveals explosive new footage, and is that Will Turner's son?

Disney has unveiled a new featurette for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and buried alongside some explosive new footage, there’s a hint that Captain Jack Sparrow could be encountering the son of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Turner (Keira Knightley). Take a look:

Did you catch it? No, not the explosion in the city square (though that did look kind of cool) - the subtitle for Brenton Thwaites’ character. It reads “Henry Turner,” which sounds an awful lot like he could be the son of the original trilogy’s romantic heroes. In a post-credits scene for Pirates 3, Will reunites with his wife and ten year old son after being bound to escort souls to the next world.

Their son was ten years old at that point, and that film came out in 2007. It’s 2017 now, which means the boy would be about 20; Thwaites himself is a bit older than that at age 27, but he has a baby face and could definitely pass for a younger man. Adding to the curiosity is the fact that young Henry’s last name was actually hidden in the film’s official synopsis, which refers to him simply as “Henry (Brenton Thwaites), a headstrong young sailor in the Royal Navy.” To me, that means either someone in the marketing department screwed up by dropping the character’s last name in this video, or the studio has changed course and decided that the secret isn’t worth withholding.

Either way, it’s certainly something for long-time fans of this franchise (which began way back in 2003) to be intrigued by. Now we’re left wondering how Bloom and Knightley might factor into this revenge tale on the high seas. Could they both swing in, save the day, and make this a family affair? We’ll find out soon enough.

Directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, and starring Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Javier Bardem, and Kaya Scodelario, Pirates of the Caribbean 5 will be released in cinemas on May 26, 2017.
