New BlazBlue slated to uppercut your console

Aksys Games announced today that it’s bringing an arcade sequel to the well-received 2D fighter Blazblue home to Xbox 360 and PS3. Developed by Guilty Gear vets ARC System Works, Blazblue: Continuum Shift promises three new characters, new gameplay modes, and a host of new moves and stages.

The new characters include Hazama the “mysterious performer”, a female knight named Tsubaki, and something or someone called ?-12 (don’t ask us).

Alongside your standard tutorial and character-specific challenge modes is a beginner mode – which our pride will no doubt keep us from trying – as well as Legion Mode. This feature, introduced in the PSP version of Blazblue, enables players to “take over Kagutsuchi” by defeating enemy armies. If it takes its cues from the PSP version, this means you’ll be savagely bludgeoning opposing fighters until they decide that joining you is preferable to being beaten to death. As you conquer enemy strongholds you’ll color in an area map, because coloring = compelling gameplay. Especially if it involves extreme bodily harm.

The first Blazblue appeared in a crowded market but shone because of its strategic depth and unique feature-set.  The question facing the sequel is whether it adds enough to the original formula to warrant another purchase.  We’ll discover the answer (and figure out what the hell a ?-12 is) sometime this summer.

ARC is notorious for this. Look how many versions of Guilty Gear X2 there are.

*SPOILER* I'm pretty sure ?-12 is Noel Vermillion's true form. As she turned out to be the same type of entity or clone of V-13 and thus seems logical to believe she is an older version.

@cyberninja: why are you complaining? Street Fighter does this too and so do most fighting games. Well although Rachel's nerfed, some characters are still imba. What a shame..

Ignoring people who say "Another new one?" because, much like SF4, it's been a full year since BlazBlue originally released and this installment is basically a "Super" version of the same game. I love Love LOVED BlazBlue and can't wait to get this installment and the PSP version by the end of the year. 'Course, I gush about the Guilty Gear series (Baiken is my main lol) every chance I get so I kinda figured I would love this new IP... I did ; ) I use Noel in BlazBlue because I love her "Gun Fu" style of fighting (Think Equilibrium fight scenes) and love how practically EVERY attack of hers cancels into each other.

Perfect for me! I haven't picked up the first one, so this will be my first Aksys Games purchase. Also, shut up Cyberninja. People do it all the time.

Urgh, not even got the first one here in Europe yet! Keep pushing back the release date...

Indeed, Ded, we UK and EU gamers are getting ZERO value for money this generation and things seem to be getting worse and not better in this regard. Anyone who mentions how great Demon's souls (after I've been twice ripped off trying to import the damn game)is to me will, from now on, be treated to a hefty slap. We wait longer for the games that we do get, we get fewer games to start with and to tall we pay extra for the idiotic situation. Europe's a big place and our money is clearly just as good as everyone else's so why do we get treated like gaming's poor relation that it's OK to rip off? Christ, remember SCEE barely managing to get SF2THR to us on PSN the SAME bloody week Capcom gave us SF4? Oh, God, you just know Capcom must have loved the way that stalled sales of their PSN only title no frikkin end!

Don't get the first game until next week in the UK
