Mortal Kombat: The Journey Begins STUPIDITY

Oh, did you think Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm was the first time Sub-zero and friends assaulted the medium of animation with a big fat stupid stick? Not so! Back in 1995, MK was at the top of its game and not even a major motion picture was enough to contain the Outworldish popularity. Enter: Mortal Kombat: The Journey Begins! It’s one of the first times I can remember a straight-to-video animated movie released to coincide with a theatrical film, and that’s not even the end of the new territory this hilarious heap forged on VHS and – fuck yes! – Laserdisc.

In addition to 55 minutes of unrelenting stupidity, MK: The Journey Begins is also features some trailblazing animation effects, showcasing a combination of traditional hand-drawn toonage with computer-generated animation... and it paid a very high price for being a pioneer. In addition to being just above-and-beyond ridiculous, this is one of the most awkward looking cartoons you’re likely to see starring characters you know and love.

Above: CG animation in its infancy… glorious

I have no idea how the hell anyone could craft a piece of animation that looks like it was made using pre-Star Wars blue screen/matte effects, but Mortal Kombat: The Journey Begins manages to accomplish that amazingly, and was terrible at everything else. Once again, thanks to theswitcher for editing the outlandish madness into a far more digestible ten minutes of good-natured mockery. More stupidity highlighted in screenshots below.

Above: Did he teleport behind him, or did Lui Kang just have a Scorpion-shaped idea?

Above: So that’s how Scorpion does it! Like Spider-man!

Above: Note the sense of scale, proximity and perspective... Now go ahead and laugh

Back when I was a kid, I got my mom to rent me this. Back then, I was blown away at the concept of seeing all those CG fight scenes (especially seeing Sub-Zero and Scorpion fight each other, something the MK movie didn't give us for some reason). I didn't really pay much attention to the non-CG scenes outside a few. Looking back on it, it's aged incredibly poorly and was pretty stupid. Yeah, the CG is pretty bad (especially when you consider this came out the same year as Toy Story), but I think the 2D stuff was even worse with bad animation and artwork (seriously, who the hell was that guy with the glasses and the hat and why didn't he move!?). Oh nostalgia... you can so cruel sometimes...

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU I couldn't finish it; it was just too much for my po' wittle brain to handle.

i owned the vhs. i watched the holy hell out of it. as a kid, i didnt think it was so stupid, and the "omg 3D fight scene!" was amazing to me back then. but, even then, i always found it funny that they recycled the same footage to make the baraka fight longer. and that johnny cage can put on glasses faster than scorpion can teleport behind liu kang. thank you for this! i loved it as a kid, and i love theswitcher's "youtube poop"-style remix today! if you could somehow affect the recaptcha with "words that begin with C but we want to spell them with a K", i think i could call it a life.

Damn...I could only watch it for 4 minutes. Strangely though, I now have a need to own this horrible movie. Hi Ho eBay, Away!

God, I remember seeing this at a video store and getting really excited about it. I thought it was the actual movie, which had just come out. When I actually watched it, I was amazed at how shitty it was. Even as a 9 year old, I knew this was fucking stupid. That unedited fight scene is fucking gold.

Holy CRAP! I owned this as a kid and I had forgotten the name (as well as if it was real)! Nice to see this again, but i'll stick with my nostalgia to tell me how good it was.
  • Siion - April 14, 2011 10:42 p.m.

I didn't watch these cartoons so i don't have the nostalgia that most others do but these are awesome.
