Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance - 2013 release, demo and more details revealed with new trailer

As part of its Pre-E3 press conference, Konami gave players around the world their first real taste of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (God, we love that silly name) since last December. Sadly, for as awesome as the swordplay looks in this new trailer that includes the return of watermelon slicing, there's unfortunate news too. Hint: Revengeance won't be out in 2012.

Yes, like seemingly half of the games we thought were coming out this fall, Revengeance is now coming out in the very crowded "Early 2013" time frame alongside games like Tomb Raider and BioShock Infinite. On the plus side, Konami will at least be releasing a small chunk of the game early, as the Revengeance demo will be included with this fall's Zone of the Enders HD collection. If you don't feel like picking it up, Konami mentions that the demo will be available later on its own.

At the very least Revengeance will be playable from the show floor at E3, so we'll give you our feelings on the game as soon as we can. In the meantime, why not read our list of the 20 biggest games still (supposedly) coming out in 2012 (ignore the Revengeance slide).

Suddenly, the Ninja Gaiden series looks severely outdated....
  • 04whim - June 2, 2012 4:15 p.m.

Devil May Cry spin off of Vergil using this combat system?
  • pr0tostar - June 2, 2012 6:16 p.m.

Platinum would never give this (back) to Capcom. It'd be up to the IP holder to find a dev that could match Platinum. I don't think Ninja Theory could, the seem like they're barely grasping classic DMC mechanics. Which is nothing against them, Platinum's devs are just tweakers or something.

Oh my god. Seriously. Oh My God. This looks FUCKING AMAZING! I can't wait. I seriously can't. I mean, I kinda wanted to pick up the ZoE HD collection before, but NOW!? I think one of the things I'm MOST excited about is the weapon variance,e, strangely enough. I mean, I'm excited as hell to be back in the MGS universe, especially playing as Raiden, but the weapons really do make it look like a DMC/Bayonetta style game with Raiden instead of Dante/Bayonetta. Which is, literally, the greatest thing in existence. If anyone can pull it off, it's Platinum, but they had better not make me regret getting this excited. Hell, I can actually wait until 2013. It'll give me time to save up £100 for the inevitable collectors edition. I got the replica Scarborough Fair with Bayonetta, so I AM NOT going to miss out on the special edition of this.

I wanted the demo now but I guess its a good excuse to get the Zone of the Enders collection. I've never played it but people keep telling me its good.

"This game has not yet been rated." Um. In the first trailer we saw a guy getting cut into mince meat with blood flying everywhere. I'm pretty sure we already know what the rating will be.
  • ultimatepunchrod - June 1, 2012 12:23 p.m.

Also, I really hope I don't need to know anything about Metal Gear Solid to play this game. Because I really want to play this. Crowded early 2013 indeed. I want this DmC and Bioshock Infinite. Man couldn't one of them have come out this year?
  • BladedFalcon - June 1, 2012 4:14 p.m.

Well, I'm pretty sure they will explains the basic back-story of Raiden, the main character. it's likely there will be references and nods to other MGS stuff, but probably nothing too essential that would make you feel lost if you hadn't played the other games. That... and well, it's a Platinum game, I don't want to sound too mean or cynical, but storytelling is far from their forte, so likely it won't matter one way or the other. You'll want to play this for the awesome combat and gameplay, mainly. Since there's a chance the story won't even make that much sense, or be that good, with MGS knowledge or not XD
  • pr0tostar - June 1, 2012 7:30 p.m.

I'm certain the story will make plenty of sense to newcomers. Think of it like how MGS is to the original Metal Gear. Kojima's people are still handling the story and writing. I believe the main writer compiled the entire "MGS Database", so there's no doubt the story will be fresh and faithful.
  • BladedFalcon - June 1, 2012 7:45 p.m.

Well... Just one question, did you hear the dialog and voice acting? does that sound Kojima quality to you? I mean, I do hope I'm wrong, and the story will turn out to be great. But I mean, as much as I love platinum? Mad World: Great ganeplay and style, shitty story, Bayonneta: Great Gampleay and style convoluted and shitty story, Vanquish Great gameplay and style: Convoluted and shitty story. See the pattern here? If Kojima's people really are handling the entirety of the story, then hopefully you'll be right. I'm just saying, the developers are ultimately the ones that make the game, and Platinum is notorious for making great games, but shitty stories.

This game is going to be so fucking AWESOME! I was hoping for a 2012 release, but not really expecting it, so the fact that it's not out until next year isn't that surprising. But it's going to be a tough wait after watching that trailer.
  • onetimebuster - June 1, 2012 9:33 a.m.

    WRONG! lol
  • gilgamesh310 - June 1, 2012 7:53 a.m.

This looka fucking awesome. At first I was a bit dissapointed thatyou couldn't cut things up in so many ways but this trailer makes it look like you can. You can use guns and there seems to be some stealth present. It just looks like the most awesome thing ever. I really hope Im not dissapointed.
  • Tjwoods18 - June 1, 2012 7:08 a.m.

Could this be open world? The area looks expansive enough to do so, but I am not going to get my hopes up. Metal gear was built on linear gameplay.
  • Tjwoods18 - June 1, 2012 7:03 a.m.

Crap Crap Crap Crap Crap Crap Crap Crap CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • PBC13 - June 1, 2012 6:33 a.m.

Once again, this games looks excellent!
  • Turtman - June 1, 2012 4:55 a.m.

I bought the original Zone of the Enders because it had the (insanely fantastic) MGS2 demo included. Will history repeat itself?
  • rob619 - June 1, 2012 3:01 a.m.

This looks EPIC!! I love the fact it is still in some way related to the Metal Gear Story, such as the PMC (Private Military Corporations) which was a big part in MGS4. The gameplay looks fun and fluid and the locations look varied. I have been waiting for this game since 2009, now more pumped then ever!
  • Tjwoods18 - June 1, 2012 7:48 a.m.

Will we see a cameo by meryl & johnny? Drebin or otacon perhaps? We of course can rule solid snake out of the equation.
  • veryweirdguy - June 1, 2012 1:50 a.m.

This looks great, but the writing in some of the voiceover is just awful. I wish more games treated writing with a bit more importance Still looks like a lot of fun though.
