LucasArts boss believes studio has room to improve

If you were underwhelmed with LucasArts's latest offerings - namely, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II - you can take comfort in knowing at least one person in the studio feels your pain. In a recent interview with MCV, company boss Paul Meegan admitted LucasArts has been performing just shy of its true potential over the last few years, and wants to see the studio to return to its former glory.

“In recent years, LucasArts hasn’t always done a good job of making games. We should be making games that define our medium, that are competitive with the best of our industry, but we’re not. That has to change,” said Meegan, who took over as head honcho one year ago.

Meegan did not offer any opinions as to why LucasArts's output  has allegedly slipped in the last few years, only that it has nothing to do with the brands or the game makers themselves, insisting, “Lucasfilm has some of the most beloved and powerful brands in entertainment, we have a loyal community of fans, and talented people in every discipline. We’re surrounded by staggeringly bright and creative people at the top of their games.”

While LucasArts has no involvement with the next two high-profile Star Wars titles, Star Wars Kinect (Terminal Reality) and The Old Republic (BioWare), Meegan said the cult franchise remains a key focus for the studio going forward, adding, “Our priority is to create authentic, immersive, high quality Star Wars games.”

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II may not have redefined the genre, but it would be a stretch to say it was an out-and-out disappointment. It's possible Meegan is being a touch too critical, but his comments are a refreshing change of pace from the standard “our game will be the greatest gift to humanity”-esque developer sound bites we typically run across on the inter-tubes. What do you think? Is LucasArts performing up to snuff, or is there room for improvement?

I have every star wars game and its been interesting to watch Lucasarts go from innovation in the jedi knight , tie fighter and battlefront series, only to move to middle of the road crap like Force Unleashed and the Clone Wars games. And they can barely release more then one game a year. Worse than that is the theiving, Force Unleashed 2 was four hours long and then you had to pay for two additional levels which were already included on the disk. As far as I can see Lucasarts just rents its star wars franchise along with its integrity to anyone who can make a game of any quality, and than sits back and waits for the money. Battlefront 2 was the last fun game they made and it came out 6 years ago.

It's expected when you abandon your best franchises, or never even attempt a spiritual successor to series like Jedi Knight.

Simple answer- a trilogy of games. Based on a trilogy of films. Imagine Lego Star Wars II, but without the Lego... No random Jedi, Sith, smugglers, aliens etc. Let us play as Luke, Han, Leia and Chewie!!!!

You know why the LucasArts team isn't doing so good? BECAUSE THERE IS NO BATTLEFRONT 3!

I bought force unleashed around christmas and I was so turned off by one of the first boss fights that I haven't played it since. LA have really changed over the years and I detest them now. They are just putting out crap because they are selling the star wars name and that's why people buy their games. Make another space combat game please.

I'm with 8bitbaby - I don't mind having Star Wars games, but I'd like a lot more than just that. Tales of Monkey Island 2, for example, or that proper Uncharted-beating Indiana Jones game we were promised last time they said all this stuff. Or just carry on re-releasing and making Special Editions of your classic titles, that'll do!

Make Republic Commando 2 and Battlefront 3 and all will be forgiven. ALL will be forgiven.

  • pimpdaddie - June 2, 2011 6:24 p.m.

For the love of all that is good, MAKE Star Wars Republic Commando 2 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Coolicle122 - June 2, 2011 6:12 p.m.

A new Star Wars Battlefront game would be a way to improve. :)
  • L00neyT00ns - June 2, 2011 5:55 p.m.

Lucasarts need to pull there finger out their arse & bring back some of the original franchises. With the release of all Stars Wars movies to Blu Ray in September & the conversion to 3d & cinema release of all the films wouldn't it be great to play Battlefront 3,as already said a new Rogue or Jedi Knight game or re-release the classic 8 bit Star Wars trilogy games to Xbox live & psn.Or maybe do a new Monkey Island.
  • rabidpotatochip - June 2, 2011 5:52 p.m.

If you think you haven't made any mistakes, there's your first one. I'm happy to hear him say they're good but could be better. It's a lot more believable than the constant "zomg we're tha best!!!11" followed by underwhelming performances of late.
  • RoeTaKa - June 2, 2011 5:40 p.m.

ok so I remember Factor 5 did the Rogue games...um, yeah c'mon lucasarts make something decent already :D
  • majorsuave - June 2, 2011 5:38 p.m.

With an open title such as that, why not move the 3rd iteration to a different time and protagonist? There are Siths and Jedis alright... why not make an open path that is shades of grey building into one path, the other ...or something in between.
  • Redeater - June 2, 2011 5:37 p.m.

On a different note isn't it great that developers can consistently call their former games crap and promise that they will deliver a better experience on their next game? This seems to be happening more often then not these days.
  • RoeTaKa - June 2, 2011 5:37 p.m.

Rogue Squadron needs to come back, in a big big way. Hell I think Rogue Leader practically sold Gamecubes. If they can nail another Rogue game I'd buy it on day one.
