If you want a decent story you can interact with yourself, write.

I for one completely agree with the article. Don't get me wrong, i enjoyed the game's ability to involve and move the player, but come on, so many plot holes, cheesy characters and that cheesy workaround with Manfred... I just felt cheated.
  • Gahmah - February 25, 2010 3:14 p.m.

I never even ran into some of those holes. Story made more sense that way strangely. except for ethan blacking out and waking up at the scene of shephard's death with origami, that made no sense.

I knew who the killer was really early on just because I have watch tons of Cop dramas and the person was a perfect and obvious Candidate. I like how they pulled it off but, if this was a movie, Critics(after a second viewing) would be like "who the eff wrote this, it has more plot holes than jumping into LOST for the first time in the middle of the 5th season..."

@crumbdunky well, seems like this article has pushed someone's buttons. take a pill. I really don't see what your problem is. the game is evidently full of plot holes. it's admirable that QD have tried to do something new but they've failed. if you're going to develop a game that has minimal input in terms of controls you can't have a flawed story arch as that's what the emphasis is then placed upon. re-read the article - especially the opening paragraph. here: "...sweep aside the surface gloss of stunning looks and moving score and Heavy Rain’s plot is a shambles.... A game whose sole purpose is serious storytelling is a very different fish to the likes of Gears of War, and crap storytelling here is like a CoD game with crap shooting mechanics. A CoD game which claimed to change shooting mechanics for the better." also take a look at previous GR articles like "Modern Warfare 2's plot holes" and you'll see it's not just HR that's come in for flak. at least you actually get to 'play' MW unlike the pitiful excuse for QTE's that HR employs. i have to agree with skyguy343 except i'd prefer it if you didn't go to ign in case i run into you there. go to gamespot instead. they'd love you over there. I bet you're a Jeff hater too!

Look, it seems to me that whenever a sight or magazine reviews a game then obviously the staff have to stand by that. Look at inFamous or Assassins Creed (1). Obviously its an opinion so bashing reviewers is pointless but I can imagine exactly how they feel. I competitively debate and when you feel someone is not accepting your point of view then its perfectly understandable to try and justify it with micro analysis or repetition of what you feel are its key facets. Games radar was close to 20% (20!!) off the Metacritic average and although that is ultimately irrelevant as its PERSONAL OPINION that would probably make me as a reviewer feel I had to justify my opinions. Thus this effective review extension was written were they attempt to show us what they meant by "bad storyline". Basically they reviewed the game comparatively harshly (although i am aware 7 is still good, something many seem to forget. I mean its still an A in my college) and are reinforcing their position with evidence that im sure will be used to backup Mr Reparez tomorrow. If you enjoy it then great, this review is irrelevant. I disagree but still love myself some GamesRadar and don't feel the need to flame.

@crumbdunky Calm your shit, Mr. Houghton was writing his opinion (and some glaring facts). He is not "bashing" the valiant effort this fine game made nor is he calling it shitty. He wrote a mighty fine article which made my morning fun. And second, stop talking shit about my favourite site. If you want your cookie-cutter articles that praise everything you love and hate everything you think is "gay" go to IGN and get the fuck off GR. We don't take kindly to fanboys here.

Exactly crustdbeat. GR have a hard-on for bashing HR for some reason and to compare someone doing something ambitious with game story, story writing and acting with something as simple as a FPS story(how many times have IW actually done so themselves let alone the number of other examples to draw on for advice, influence or inspiration?)is so churlish it's not true. I thought the review was unfair and a little short of understanding over the way the whole thing was new to all involved. Writing for a multi routed game in this way hasn't really been attempted before and for the actors it must have been really hard and really confusing but GR takes no consideration of this yet seems happy with Bethesda constantly doing NO QA testing and making us buy the games for the fun of doing it ourselves as they go patch happy later on! Fair enough, I didn't expect everyone to find HR the game for them but GR make WAY too much of the acting and writing shortfalls in the game as both are largely fantastic which is why, imo, the times where it does falter seem so jarring and noticeable. MW2 presented a pi55 easy task for a writer and for the actors compared to HR but go on GR, stomp on the people manfully trying to bring you something new! Don't worry that you're going way over the top with this and totally fail to grasp the difficulties and hurdles the HR team faced and, by and large, conquered with complete aplomb. It's an easy target for nitpickers yet you let so many other games get away with much less forgiveable shortcomings than these. Hell, if you compare it to Cage's last effort it's effin War and Peace! And a truthful comparison to the joke(and remember single route, easy as a kids essay to write)plot of MW2 should be weighed so heavily in favour of QD's brave, flawed masterpiece that half would be made up of laughing at the one sided nature of it all! So, yeah, you side with the game we all bought twice before that IW stuck in a new suit, didn't bother testing, dragged online gaming backwards by refusing to have dedicated servers as standard (as the market leading shooter in 2009 to take away PC dedicateds and to not have them on PS360 is a sick, ass backwards joke for a game described by Kotick as "premium"-what does that make Warhawk?), took gratuitous violence to a new level just for the press attention(seriously, when it isn't even something you HAVE to play how damn superfluous and gratuitous is the No Russian BS)and was a mess at launch and got worse since rather than the game trying something new. Way to further the industry guys. Way to encourage new ideas, new growth or anything other than the dishwater dreary norm we suffer.Good job,GR, good effin job. With your attitude we'd all be stuck playing bloody text adventures from when that was the dominant genre and FPS would never have gotten off the ground for the crime of not being perfect on it's first few outings when no one knew exactly what they were doing with it. Would you have stopped Columbus and stuck with the flat earth too? No, HR isn't perfect(it's far from it-though so are U2 and ME2 for that matter)but considering the fact it beat most of it's new problems into instant submission and provides one of the freshest experiences this gen means it deserves a lot more respect than you want to give it.Nitpicking a game in a totally new genre where there's bound to be teething issues is as brave and challenging as shooting rats in a barrel(and equally distasteful imo)but knock yourselves out. If everyone felt like you do we'd NEVER get anything new as devs would be too scared to try things except from the rehashed BS you compared HR unfavourably to here. If you seriously believe the story and writing in MW2 is superior you need a new therapist -and some taste. I'm more disappointed than angry but just fail to see the need for the article on any level apart from the fact it's about as funny as masturbating using a cheesgrater.
  • crustdbeat - February 25, 2010 10:47 a.m.

this article sucks. I found this game to be more situational... i couldnt give a shit if the story was a little bit trippy. for your first "plothole catch" how do you not know that she actually explained who he was? not just whispered his name? any i liked this game obviously. ahhh im going now. btw this is the very first GR article that i havent liked haha. defeat.
  • speno93 - February 25, 2010 9:41 a.m.

haha very funny, not much point having a minimum of interaction if the story is crap. That is why the Phoenix Wright series does so well, with brilliant writing. guess the PS3 will have to wait a little longer for this years killer app
