Grand Theft Auto III – Full Access Playthrough

It's not uncommon to pick up an old game and be amazed by how poorly it holds up. It can also be crushing to find that the games you have such fond memories of... sort of suck nowadays. This was our fear when it came to Grand Theft Auto III, a game that's celebrating its 10th birthday today, on Oct. 22, 2011. In order to make sure it still plays as well as we remember, Hollander Cooper, Henry Gilbert, Mikel Reparaz, and Charlie Barratt blew the dust off an old copy of the game, threw it in, and started doing some missions.

"Started" being the key word....

We actually ended up killing cops and having sex with prostitutes. We wanted, so badly, to just play the game as it was meant to be played, but after like four minutes we started typing in codes and slaughtering people. Happy birthday, Grand Theft Auto III!

I remember just racing a banshee around the highways of the middle island, listening to Lazlow and seeing how long it'd take before I crashed. Thanks for doing this GTA3 week guys, it's brought some misty-eyed memories back for quite a few of us, I'd wager.

Ah, GTA III, so damn awesome. My memories consist of playing a bootleg Russian version that was technically a modded game called Real GTA which replaced the car models with more realistic ones (the Mule was more of a BMW than a truck, if I recall and etc) and real ads on billboards. It was pretty badass, and after playing it for years and finally seeing the *real* GTA, I was surprised at how "plain" the car models looked. The game was fantastic, of course, but what really made the game special was... f*ckin' Lazlow. Years later, when I downloaded an mp3 dump of the GTA3 soundtrack, I was amazed to find out it was only about an hour; I obviously encountered the same bits throughout playthroughs, but I could have sworn it was 3 hours long at least. Squirrel's good eatin', motherf*ckers.

I would play through the campaign; I didn't understand the people who would treat it only as a destructive sandbox - there's an actual story people, goddamnit! However, when I would spend 10-20 minutes f*cking around, my entertainment of choice was the tank... shooting backwards. The shots would give you a speed boost, so I would barrel down the road, picking up speed, ramming into other cars and blowing the sh*t out of them. Getting 6 stars was very satisfying, and knowing they couldn't do sh*t to me was even more so. Who's going to argue with a tank that has the God-like power of exploding things with a single touch?

What I enjoyed most about the PS2 GTA games was just taking cars, trying to make insane jumps, and seeing all the things I could do with them before they exploded (LOVED bailing out of a flaming car, only to see it blow up dozens of pedestrians LOL)

You guys should have shown the ps2 version to get a better idea of just how bad it looks by today's standards. Those real time reflections on the cars look waaaaay too nice. Also I believe the xbox version came out in 2003, so...Eight year anniversary tomorrow, yeah!

I hope they do HD updates of the PS2 era GTA games. I've tried playing 3, and I kept trying to use the right stick to control the camera, which doesn't work. Modern controls would help these old games quite a bit.

I hope rampages come back in GTA V. Good FAP! I forgot how entertaining it is watching someone else play GTA 3.
