Gamescom 2010: Want to score Achievements on your mobile? Well the Xbox Live phone is coming

The PlayStation phone is rumoured, but the Xbox phone is definitely real. Detailed this morning as part of Microsft's pre-press conference Gamescom line-up, the Windows Phone 7 is going to come with full connectivity to Xbox Live and a whole boatload of Live-enabled (that means Achievements-included) games based on big Xbox franchises. What's that you say? You'd like full details of the games and how it all works? Why, they're all right here.

The Windows Phone 7 has a gaming hub built around Xbox Live. You'll be able to access and communicate with your friends list, buy games and content from the Marketplace, access the Xbox Live Spotlight feeds, and contribute to your overall Gamerscore with the games you play on your phone.

The downsides? Don't expect to be playing full-fat Gears of War in your pocket. Although franchises such as Halo and Crackdown have been mentioned, we're very much looking at mobile-focused spin-offs rather than the main games. No PlayStation-style remote play has been mentioned, so you'll be playing the likes of Crackdown 2: Project Sunburst rather than the original Crackfown 2. Not that a touch screen is really a replacement for a 360 pad anyway. And while multiplayer will be available, it will be turn-based rather than simultaneous.

And we can't help wondering, with a bunch of this functionality already available over any mobile browser from Xbox.com, is a dedicated device really necessary, except in terms of earning Achievements on the move? Let us know what you think. In the meantime, check out the current list of confirmed games, which at the moment sounds a bit like standard mobile stuff. But you know, with Achievements.

No achievements, No purchase. Even on DLC. Ability to earn legit achievements would push me to buy the phone and also the apps/games. It needs a clip-on controller tho. I don't want to play xbox games with a touch screen... leave that to Apple.

3 zombie games? A little overboard don't you think?

So we're getting two new N-Gages now? Hopefully Nintendo doesn't try to buy into this too, they've been making too good a comeback lately to do it.

As long as the battery and touch screen isn't shit and it's reasonably priced, I'll probably get one since my phone is barely holding a charge right now.

Don't get too excited about that Halo thing, Waypoint, because it's nothing more than a Halo achievement tracker, just like the one on the 360 now.

oh god.... i get a feeling in the future my mom will buy me another phone and get this one, despite me not owning a 360.

Yeah, it's been mentioned before, but the full details only popped up this morning as a GC announcement.

First! Seems like the gaming phone market is being targeted heavily at the moment. Then again, why let Apple have all the fun? Some games look alright, I think I saw Splinter Cell Conviction and Assassin's Creed. I bet though that Assassin's Creed will be that terrible game I bought on DS... The Windows Phone 7 looks cool but it does not look like the dedicated gaming device that the PSP Phone will be. I have an Xbox 360 but I would have to say I would buy the PSP Phone over this.

Hm could be interesting if the phone isn't a POS and is reasonably priced. Could be a nice waste of time for people who don't already own PSP's/DS's and have nothing else to do. Personally I'd like to see MS roll out their very own portable with tie in achievements instead of tacked on mobile games. Castlevania and Earthworm Jim could be cool on a phone but where's Plants vs Zombies?!?
