Game music of the day: Katamari Damacy

Game: Katamari Damacy

Song: Katamari on the Rocks

Composer: Yu Miyake

Above: Katamari on the Rocks from Katamari Damacy

Look, I'm supposed to be on vacation today, so let's not make this any harder than it has to be. The theme of Katamari Damacy is a no-brainer for GMOTD - the Katamari series has consistently amazing soundtracks. I don't think there's even a single so-so song in the entire Katamari catalog.

The OST for Katamari Damacy, called Katamari Fortissimo Damacy, pulls from a wide variety of musical influences (jazz, samba, J-Pop, traditional VGM), but still manages to be totally cohesive. It's catchy and energetic, and while not quite as wacky as the gameplay itself, definitely inhances said wackiness. Katamari on the Rocks is a great representation of the cheery spirit of Katamari's music.

Above: And of course, Dokaka's beatbox version from We Love Katamari. There's also this beautiful instrumental version

Yes!! I love this song. Honorable mentions to Katamari on the Swing (the SEXY SYNTHESIZER ALL ABOUT NAMCO MIX that is).

I love the soundtrack to Katamari! (all of them are good) my gf plays Katamari tons, and i always get the songs stuck in my head and find myself humming them days after i hear them. im glad this game finally gets mention of its odd and catchy soundtrack.

One song I don't mind getting stuck in my head.
  • CH3BURASHKA - September 6, 2010 8:12 p.m.

Oh, I was hoping for "Cherry Blossom Color Season". Great song anyways.

@GamesRadarLizzieCuevas Lonely Rolling Star is my most favorite song in Katamari Damacy. I tried playing it by ear on piano.
  • GamesRadarMichaelGrimm - September 7, 2010 2:19 a.m.

The best Katamari song? All of them.
  • sleepy92ismypsn - September 7, 2010 2:37 a.m.

I've been meaning to play Damacy. The music is great.
  • Thequestion 121 - September 7, 2010 3:50 a.m.

One of the greatest games I have ever played. I love this series and its music lol
  • 510BrotherPanda - September 7, 2010 4:32 a.m.

@GamesRadarMichaelGrimm I have all 4 OST from the first 4 games DLed to my iPod still. It's so great. I like "Baby Universe" for its strings, and "Burning Hot Savannah", the animal noise medley one, because it's not afraid of being ridiculous.
  • TURbo - September 7, 2010 5:57 a.m.

I was not a fan of the music in Beautiful Katamari. It was less of the music in Damacy, and melody is with cats instead of electric piano or something.

Fun Fact: If you don't like Katamari Damacy, you have no soul, and can go back to your boring brown gun game.
  • xDxP - September 8, 2010 3:08 a.m.

Great choice, NA NANANA NA NA NA NAAAA~

"Disco Prince" from We <3 Katamari will make me dance down the road. Even if I'm driving.
