Game of the month, June 2012

Summer kicks off with two games that defy natural law!

Winner: Gravity Rush

Read the Spelunky review.

As the initial wave of PlayStation Vita launch titles came to a crawl, two eagerly anticipated games dropped in June. Metal Gear Solid HD Collection revisits not only the PS2 classics, but somewhat functions as a companion to the PS3 game more than its own standalone experience. That leaves Gravity Rush as the unequivocally best PlayStation Vita game that’s out there.

As heroine Kat, you’ll be thrust into a gravity-defying fight against the Nevi, creatures that wants to colonize the burg of Hekseville. With a unique approach to not only gameplay, but methods of interacting with the PlayStation Vita hardware. As you get used to utilizing Kat’s powers to the max, Gravity Rush empowers you with an arsenal of incredible moves that never cease to thrill along the way.

If you’ve been on the fence about buying a PlayStation Vita, Gravity Rush is a great reason to finally make the leap.

Runner-up: Quantum Conundrum

Read the Quantum Conundrum review.

It’s no small feat to follow up one of the finest games of the last decade, but Kim Swift and the team at Airtight Games have concocted another excellent puzzle title. With Quantum Conundrum, that familiar thread of logic and spatial puzzles colliding with platforming elements arises again. It’s not fair to constantly judge QC under the lens of Valve’s title, since its its own entity. If you dive in and try to tackle its brain-teasers, you’ll love the process of discovering how many ways you can skin a cat. Well, not literally. That’s messy. And kinda cruel.

There are GREAT games on the Vita. I don't have Gravity Rush yet, but I will certainly be picking it up (MGS Collection, as well)! WipEout 2048, UMVC3, Mortal Kombat, Super Stardust Delta, Rayman Origins, Resistance, Uncharted, and FIFA are all really good or great. Even Ridge Racer is good for fans of the series. With titles like AC3: Liberation, LBP Vita, SF X Tekken, and NFS: Most Wanted on their way to the system, I'm completely stoked! Yes, after the HUGE launch lineup, there has been a serious lack of releases, but I'm not complaining. The Vita games that I have already are enough, and I will be picking up more that I may not even get to for awhile! I am not a fanboy or anything; I just feel like some people are being a little tough on the Vita because of a few months of slow releases. I remember having to wait almost all year for anything decent to release for game systems because companies all wanted to cash in on the Christmas holiday money. Anyway, I am excited to see that a Vita game is GOTM, and I hope that the systems catches on a bit better. Honestly, people don't know what they're missing! :-)

It is good, bt it ultimatly fails in comparison to its older counterparts.

Do you mean Nobunaga's Ambition or Pokemon? If you mean Nobunaga's Ambition then I kind of agree. If you mean Pokemon then I don't because they aren't comparable. I do hope they make a sequel, though.

Gotta say, love gravity rush but Resistance is a must own on vita. Trust me.

People seriously bashed that game to death when ultimatly it was not needed. It felt, played, and expressed its story just like every resistance game out there.

Ah gravity rush the reason I got a vita in the first place, I just hope more new games come out for vita.
