Existence of divine power 18% more likely: Resident Evil 4, Code Veronica tipped for HD remakes

HD is the gift that keeps on giving. Not only has it been instrumental in making this generation one of the biggest genuine evolutions we've seen so far, but it's given us a legitimate reason to go back and play the best games of yesteryear, via re-releases that actually add something. And it means that devs can make double the profit on an old game without having to fork out the budget of an actual game development, so everybody wins!*

But while the worth of HD remakes varies depending your love of the particular game and your willingness to look past occasional last-gen coarseness**, when one of the best games of all time is tipped for the HD touch-up, all considerations become meaningless in the face of frantic clapping and squealing.

Yep, there's rumour coming from that there Famitsu, via the lovely, fragrant people at Andriasang (with their hair shimmering in the sunlight and their smiles all sparkling and ethereal) that Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil: Code Veronica are coming to the 360 and PS3. So far, talk is of a two-game compilation disc called "Resident Evil Revival Selection HD Remastered Version"***. Here's hoping the Resi 4 code comes from the far superior Gamecube version though. The PS2 port was grotty in comparison, and it would be madness to use it.

Why no previous Resis? The pre-rendered backgrounds would be graphical herpes when blown up to HD. Resi 4 in particular should look stunning though. It was possibly the best-looking game of last generation and it still looks great now, even in SD. Should this happen (and with claims of four pages dedicated to the collection in this week's Famitsu, it's sounding pretty likely) there really will be no need for Resident Evil 5 to exist any more. At all.

*Your mileage may vary.

**And the fact that emulators do this stuff for free. BUT ARE ILLEGAL.

And knowing Capcom they would hold back the Mercenaries missions, bonus costumes and weapons and release them separately as DLC at £4.99 each. Seriously, they have pissed me off with MvC3's overpriced DLC (I only wanted to play as Jill in the first place!) I'd like to see a HD remake of the remake of Resident Evil 1 though. That game was pretty badass with the Crimson Heads. Meant you had more to think about when killing the zombies in the first place. And Lisa Trevor was mega creepy. While I'm on the subject, here's a list of other HD remakes I'd love to see: Grim Fandango Broken Sword 2-4 The Curse of Monkey Island/Escape from MI SSX Tricky/SSX3 Earthworm Jim 2 As you can see, I like my adventure games ;)

OK, this comment seemed a bit odd to me (Maybe I read the initial article wrong): "The Wii version of RE 4 was the best by a country mile.... the controls were PERFECT...I would buy this (non-Revolution version) for sure" If you think the Revolution version is the best, why would you buy a HD remake? Just to get Code Veronica? (and you're wrong. The Revolution controller is 100% proven to not be the "best" for any game. It hasn't been found to be even acceptable for any games.)

"there really will be no need for Resident Evil 5 to exist any more. At all." - - hahahahaha i <3 GR

@db1331 Agreed. That's why unless the PS3 version has move support, count me out. I played the standard controller version second, and it felt clunky in comparison.

Do you guys at GR ever shut up about RE5. It's a good game and you guys gave it a 9 so just chill out.

Resident Evil Revival Selection HD Remastered Version? Will that even fit on the box?
  • JLThatshilarious - March 23, 2011 11:07 p.m.

    Also, Regenerators in HD D':

They better make co-op Mercs. NECKBREAKAH!

Nice! I started playing RE 4 on my PC and then the PC died and I haven't had the money to replace it, but my Xbox 360 is still working well.
  • ultimatepunchrod - March 23, 2011 7:46 p.m.

@ssjMrFord thank you so much for saying that. i completely agree. Resi 5 was awesome. and a huge seller. they need to play it again if they dont agree.
  • ssjMrFord - March 23, 2011 6:18 p.m.

This web site's constant hating on RE5 is maddening sometimes. RE5 is a fantastic game, while not as good as 4 in some regards at least the story isn't some shit sandwich 80s action movie reject.
  • BeLuckyTreacle - March 23, 2011 5:35 p.m.

If it's censored i'll never forgive them!
  • Z-man427 - March 23, 2011 5:13 p.m.

Modern TPS controls will make this brilliant. The lack of "run'n'gun" in RE5 made it awkward to play.
  • Sargasm - March 23, 2011 4:24 p.m.

I usually don't get outwardly excited about this sort of thing, but I'm super pumped at the prospect of playing RE4 again in HD!
  • db1331 - March 23, 2011 4 p.m.

The Wii version of RE 4 was the best by a country mile. Not only did you get all the bonus features from the previous ports, like the Ada Wong missions, but the controls were PERFECT. You could aim so much better with the Wiimote than with a standard controller. I would buy this for sure. I've never been able to play Code Veronica. Even a used copy of the GC port is like $30. Throw in an HD copy of RE 4 and you've got one hell of a deal.
  • Clovin64 - March 23, 2011 3:14 p.m.

Oh God yes! First Ico/SotC, and now Resi 4? Are all my favourite games from last gen getting HD remakes then? Time to cross my fingers and hope that Final Fantasy X and XII and Silent Hill 2 and 3 get HD re-releases sometime soon...
  • xXxBattousaixXx - March 23, 2011 3:14 p.m.

I want! I played very little of Resi 4 cuz my neighbors efd up my disc. I never played CODE Veronica and this would be a good chance to play it.
  • HumorTumor - March 23, 2011 2:24 p.m.

@IIIIIACEIIIII that's 1/3 of the way through the game. CVX is a very long game, and also one of my least favorites. And 4 is for me a sign of Resident Evil changing for the worse. It's too bad nintendo helped publish REmake and RE0, as those would be better games to celebrate 15 years with. CV has aged horribly and RE4 can hardly be called a RE game. But I'll still buy it for my RE collection. I'm glad it's coming on a disc and not DLC.

QWERTYCommander: I know, it was more of a joke than anything else. But as you say, barely anyone uses them to back up games they already own.
  • QWERTYCommander - March 23, 2011 1:56 p.m.

*facepalm* Emulators ARE NOT ILLEGAL. The games are, if you download them. And even then, the games are legal if you rip the game out of your own disc (Alright, barely anyone uses an emulator legally, but still).
