Everyone (except Wii owners) getting Sonic CD in time for holiday season

If it seemed like not much an official fanfare was being made of the triumphant return of Sonic CD in the form of an XBLA port, perhaps that’s only because the game’s new audience is much wider than that. Sega has announced that the game will be making it to pretty much every platform you give a damn about by the end of the year, unless you give a damn about something that’s not XBLA, PSN, PC, iPhone, iPad, Android or Windows Phone. Notable by its exception is the platform plenty of people still technically give a damn about, the Wii. Wii. Is the Sega/Nintendo enmity making a late comeback? (No).

In an excuse that carries a whiff of that old “the SNES doesn’t have the technology to render blood” chestnut, Sega has explained that the WiiWare platform lacks the chops necessary to replicate the CD-quality sound of the technologically-mindblowing-circa-1993 original – so, no Sonic CD for Wii owners. Everyone else, on the plus side, will get both sets of audio, Japanese and English – which is basically the best possible answer to the first question everyone would inevitably be asking. Exact release dates haven’t yet been given, but the title will be available on all the listed platforms by year’s end, and a playable demo will be available at PAX this weekend.

I am not amused. You mean an ipod has the ability to play this, but the wii can't? I call bs. And why can't they bring it to the 3ds? I don't care if it isn't in 3d, and I am fairly sure that it can play games better than the ipod and it's timewaster-apps can.

Huzzah! This is great news. No love for the wii or 3ds kinda makes sense because these platforms are not exactly where the market for this game is sadly, but you'll prolly still need a newer phone for it. I still don't understand how tiny roms become about 300x their size when ported, but I'm not completely familiar with sega cd hardware, I just want to finally play this game that I've only heard praise for.

You obviously have no idea about what platform owners like Sonic games ...
  • NinSage - August 25, 2011 6:44 p.m.

I can see why SEGA would keep skipping the platform that Sonic games sell best on. (wha?!?!) This is why good companies end up going software only, SEGA.

Yes, I figured people were beginning to give a damn about the 3DS but I guess not, according to this article.
  • OhUltra - August 25, 2011 7:30 p.m.

I will now, for the second day in a row, cry tears of joy. I'll finally be able to get back with my baby. At home, and on the go.

The Wii can't handle a game from the early 90s? Say what?
  • Longnuts - August 25, 2011 7:56 p.m.

Hahah! This reeks of nostalgia, of the days of "Sega does what NintenDON'T!"
  • BadWobot - August 25, 2011 8:03 p.m.

If you can find the GameCube "Sonic Gems Collection" THEN you can play "Sonic CD" on Wii! So... so there!

That's a rather lame sounding excuse for not bringing it to the Wii. But I still look forward to playing this remake on PC.

A rather lame sounding excuse for not bring able to port it to Wiiware. Still, I look forward to this remake. :)

This is an Oprah moment right here. "You get Sonic CD!" "You get Sonic CD!" "You get Sonic CD!" "Everyone gets Sonic CD!" "... except you, Wii."
  • soranamineforever - August 25, 2011 8:23 p.m.

This is something not brought up in this article, but this isn't a straight up port. Its going through some physics changes by some guy well known in the SEGA community for good fangames. That, and you'll have the option of using the Sonic 2 spindash here, rather than the one Sonic CD originally had. And this is good, because that one was crap. Wow, I can't swear anymore? I am disappoint.

Taxman XD At least, I hope it's his Retro Engine.
  • oshunanat - August 25, 2011 9:18 p.m.

I look forward to this game draining my iPhone battery for hours on end!
  • NanoElite666 - August 25, 2011 9:59 p.m.

Definitely going to look into this, since I never owned a Sega CD back in the day and therefore have never played this game.
  • Linktoreality - August 25, 2011 10:56 p.m.

No Wii or 3DS? I call bullsh*t. I'll just dig up my old copy of this for PC and have another go. (P.S., since when has sh*t been a banned word on GR?)

I call BS, but whatever, thats what being a multigamer is about!
  • myguyfromthe80s - August 26, 2011 6:17 a.m.

Best Sonic Game made in my opinion. As someone has already mentioned you can play it via the Gamecube release, it was also released on a compilation for the PS2. First they give Front Mission 3 on PSN Now this? Wow! Wow - All I need now are Eternal Champions (Mega CD Version) and Snatcher!
  • LBD_Nytetrayn - August 26, 2011 11:53 a.m.

    I thought the PS2 version was Japan-only?
