E3 2010: New Star Wars: The Old Republic trailer is better than the whole prequel trilogy

I'll admit, I never thought I'd react to Star Wars like this again. The wide-eyed, excitable Star Wars kid I once was has long-since been beaten to a pulp by disappointing movies and over-saturation. But ye gods, has this stunning new trailer for BioWare's upcoming Old Republic MMO started to stir things up again. Step back and give the downed fanboy some air, people. There's a chance he might yet live.

What have we got? Nearly six minutes of constant, mind-blowing action and pathos, setting the scene for the period of Star Wars history that the game is going to depict. 3500 years before the events of the movies, the Sith Empire has hit Alderaan with the help of a few Bounty Hunters, and it's hit it hard. Republic Troopers are fighting back, but it's going to be one hell of a fight. But there might just be some help and hope on the way...

Watch it. Just watch it now, and I'll provide a few brief notes on the particular points that really made me do a happy little air punch.

00:30 - The glory days of Alderaan, the planet so unfortunately vaporised in A New Hope. It should be a bloody gorgeous environment to explore.

00:38 - Mmmm, sleek, sexy proto-TIE fighters

00:47 - Lots of Sith and a Bounty Hunter make for a bloody terrifying force. We know that Sith Warriors and Bounty Hunters are going to be playable classes, along with the Republic Troopers we also see here. I thought that Bounty Hunter would be everyone's first choice, but given the sheer amount of badassery on show from all sides here, now I'm not so sure,

1:15 - This is goddman brutal. If the in-game group combat can simulate even half of this, we're looking at a stunner.

1:30 - Note that the Sith Battle Droids have rather AT-AT-like stylings.

1:48 - This Sith Warrior is properly terrifying, just like they should be. Forget your red and black facial tattoos. This is what Sith are supposed to look like.

2: 16 - I really wish the prequel trilogy had pulled off this this kind of emotional impact.

2:33 - And speaking of scary Sith, this guy really reminds me of Lord of the Rings' Ring Wraiths.

2:57 - I really wish the prequel trilogy had been as epically badass as this.

3:38 - I always wondered if Jedi could do that. It turns out they can.

4:17 - Altogether now: HADOOOOOKEN!

And there you have it. What do you think? Is The Old Republic restoring your faith in Star Wars games? Or in fact, maybe even Star Wars in general? Let me know in the comments, or via our portals on Facebook and Twitter.

Well that confirms it, even if it does come out for the Mac, I am buying the best gaming PC to play this game.

The reason the troop is rushing probably because armor that can withstand a lightsabe, such as cortis or beskar. I didn't see and decapitations, even when the Sith were doing exucutions...the Republic might have something up there sleves...

This was a awesome trailer but the actual game is not going to look or play anything like this
  • Games_Radar_DaveMeikleham - June 15, 2010 8:14 a.m.

Turncoat bastard. Sith is literally the best of the six films. And this will in no way bear even the slightest resemblance to the actual game.

Just watched this on the official website and found that my favourite website (Gamesradar) had managed to also pull this amazing trailer out from E3. but man that Kamahameha at 4:17 was epic

The thing I'll never figure out is why the grunts with guns always feel the need to rush the guys with lightsabers that only really work up close. Yes, they can deflect the rounds from the gun, yes they can force pull you in, and yes they can throw the lightsabers. However, when you close the gap, they can slice you to ribbons too.

This is an amazing trailer. But I don't think any MMO could reach this level of action. So what exactly am I suppose to be excited about?
  • Evil_AppleJuice - June 15, 2010 1:55 a.m.

Even the man on TV had a boner while i was watching this. I cant wait, this just made my top games to watch for list.
  • SoutheastSam - June 15, 2010 1:46 a.m.

All I can say is, Rise Against in a Sims trailer?
  • valance23322 - June 15, 2010 1:41 a.m.

i agree that they should make a movie like this but you guys sayin star wars in dead/dying should really read the books (yes they are still writing them) they are really good

Looks great, but... The troopers still have the T shaped visor which was intended to emulate ancient Mandalorian warriors. This is rendered completely redundant since the Sith are allied with real Mandalorians.
  • djsn1per - June 15, 2010 1:29 a.m.

Jedi...Trooper...Sith...Bounty Hunter...can't decide! This trailer makes any class look like a blast (and badass). I am personally a big fan of it being an MMO
  • Gable - June 15, 2010 12:18 a.m.

I hope Lucas is taking notes about how to make a GOOD movie.
  • Gorlack312 - June 15, 2010 12:14 a.m.

They're not clones, or at least i dont think they are. The armor is similer, but its been evolving. That armor to the Mando-Clone armor to the Stormtrooper stuff. Not as much limb-cutting-off as id like...still awsome though
  • Jacko415 - June 14, 2010 11:54 p.m.

George Lucas could take some pointers from bioware
  • aequitas13 - June 14, 2010 11:51 p.m.

holy shnikes! that WAS better than the prequel trilogy.
  • Embolado - June 14, 2010 11:48 p.m.

    Hellgate London anyone?
  • Spartan11794 - June 14, 2010 11:40 p.m.

That is the best soldier ever, so badass
  • IChooseUAntistaMON - June 14, 2010 11:40 p.m.

Why are there Clone troopers if this is 3500 years before the movies?
  • Samael - June 14, 2010 11:28 p.m.

In all seriousness, I would pay full ticket price to see a full-length Star Wars film made by Blur and Bioware. Both this trailer and 2009's are that SITHING GREAT. But...I sadly still believe the game itself will not be nearly as awesome and story-focused as we hope it will. I would still have VASTLY preferred a single-player game. Whether or not the game lives up to the hype, these trailers will have made it worthwhile.
