E3 2010: Hands-on with Quantum Theory

Quantum Theory (still can't figure out why it's called that) is a little like Gears of War, Gears of War, Gears of War, and maybe a little RE 5, Clive Barker's Jericho, and Gears of War. You're a ripped-as-shit manly-man man, and you and your sexy side-kick have to stop something that's probably really bad from happening.

Success in the demo we played depended on us constantly being behind cover - running in the open will get you killed quickly. We could hold three weapons at a time, and though we had a little trouble distinguishing their icons, they were all a lot of fun, and there were lots of them! In the course of one, small level, we used a machine gun, shotgun, rocket launcher, grenade launcher, saw gun, plasma gun, and sniper rifle.

But as we said - we had to stay behind cover. There are melee attacks and combos, but we only used them when forced to (directed into a narrow passage and ambushed) - it was all running and slamming into concrete barriers the rest of the time. Not that there's anything wrong with that - the shooting was fun, if standard.

Visually, it's pretty but overloading. You, the monsters, and the environment all look a bit like they're layered with strips of wet clay. It's a lot to take in. Oh, and If "stop something really bad" isn't enough of a story description for you, check out our previous previews.

I played the demo, and its actually really fun. And if you sprint up to your enemies, you can melee all you want, you just cant jog to them or youll die. Ill probably buy this used as soon as i find a copy available. re-captcha: enthoutr pursuing. Who or what is enthoutr and why is it pursuing something?

Reminds me of how I feel about Dark Sector: An awesome buy for $10-20, but not for much more.

I'm a sucker for anything slightly Nouveaux and some of the backdrops are purely that so I have a soft spot for Tecmo's slightly wonky shooter. Maybe later in the game everything gets Art Deco on your ass? No? Arts and crafts, Macintosh, maybe? Am I the only one who picks their TPS by which decade's interior design school it uses? Surely not.

Meh didn't like Jericho and Gears got boring real fast.
  • CH3BURASHKA - June 17, 2010 11:22 p.m.

I know absolutely nothing about this game, and it looks crazy. I might give it a try, but there's just too much other more important stuff coming.

Looks cool not as excited for it as other games but I keep a close watch on it.

I have no idea what this is about. And therefore am not interested yet. But who knows, could be good, even if its not original.

The sidekick looks like an emo'd up Yorda.

SO essentially, they combined the idea behind a Western protagonist and an Eastern sidekick. Regardless of over-thinking a game where you shoot the **** out of everything, this is actually pretty cool... though I can't shake that whole "bargain bin" feeling, which COULD be contributed to it's generic looking environments and character models. Still, I played Jericho and Legendary so I'll still be playing this lol
