Dota 2 trailer is as action-packed as it is confusing

In keeping with the theme of Dota 2's marketing campaign – whose key message seems to be, “if you love Dota, you'll love this, and if you don't know what Dota is, screw you” – the title got an official trailer to coincide with the game's impending public reveal at the Gamescom-based International tournament. Fan of the original? You'll thrill to this clip's Michael Bay-style dramatization of the game's strategy action. Still waiting to find out what all the fuss is about? Here's an advert for a fantasy game where you can pick a fast Elf or a strong Barbarian.

Above: Images surfaced this weekend of what purports to be the game itself. For the purposes of this article, let's say they look pretty legit

We've been following Dota 2 since its original announcement, and it's great to see a fan-made project flourish under the direction of Valve – the studio has a proven record for noting and developing exceptional user-generated game content, and looks ready to do well again with this Warcraft 3 sequel/spinoff. However, if you've not been keeping tabs on this title – a continuation of an underground mod to a decade-old game, named for an acronym that doesn't exist anymore and with a play style all its own – it'd be interesting to hear what you make of this trailer, whose glimpse of the game's action and variety is tempered by a pretty generic sort of approach and makes it look more like a beat 'em up than the role-play strategy it is. Of course, it's intended for a Gamescom audience, at which Dota 2 is a top-tier presence – but what do you, presumably not in attendance at the German convention, think?

Since i play HoN and not lol, i dont' know if they can see some of their heroes, but i definitely saw behemoth in there. and that red orc... we all know who HE resembles, rite?! hahaha DOTA2 GET OVER HERE ALREADY!

Traxex is really ugly and copied Ashe. @tuomotaivainen Lol saw Dota had a female night elf throwing frost arrows , and Riot created a human female queen throwing frost arrows , with normal cutie voice. Now you see on Dota2 Traxex being humanoid with nearly the same equipment Ashe has , and do not tell me they couldn't think something more unique than this.. Also she looks ugly , check her hair - they are like 1 part - a stone. The lips , i won't comment them , and the eyes are like MAD MAD MAD MAD MAD MAD MAD. Anyway i'm bored to get into basic details.. tbh i was expecting something must better but we shall see.

For all you idiots stating the LoL "cameo's" in the trailer please realize that the the Hero's displayed are ones that Riot actually based THEIR Hero's off of, for the most part anyway. These are the originals, Drow (Ashe), Axe (Trynd), and I forget which one Ryze is based off of. Funny thing is, Axe and the "Ryze" actually don't play like their LoL counter-parts, Drow/Ashe do share some similarities though.

well since this is a sequel idk how it will b but hopefully it wont dissapoint. This is one of the only games i would like to only have a multiplayer, like TF2, and no story.

I see Ashe makes a cameo in the trailer.

Did anyone else get a strong "merchant from Aladdin intro" vibe in the trailer? I half expected it to break into song.

    LoL's cinematic trailer is better.

Oh, and: A: Cinematic trailers for games RARELY present true representations of the games they are made for. and B: "glimpse of the game's action and variety is tempered by a pretty generic sort of approach and makes it look more like a beat 'em up than the role-play strategy it is" could also be said about LoL's trailer, which was just as awesome.

DotA champions are either Strength, Agility or Intelligence based (and thus purchase items that bolster their respective bases). The cinematic trailer for DotA2 is just incorporating that mechanic into the story, that's all.

As one who's never played DOTA, this trailer seems to be advertising the fantasy-genre equivalent of Deus Ex; it's main focus is on how the player can pursue and succeed at whichever play-style they wish. Reading some of your past previews of the game, it would appear that they're sending the wrong message for a game which only has 5 different character-types. That's my impression, anyways.

those are just heroes from dota who happen to look like LoL counterparts

@GRgfenu Those guys are from League of Legends. I'm pretty sure that DOTA 2 is a completely new story, because I'm not sure Valve would be able to gain the rights to Warcraft characters.

Wait, didn't I see Ashe, Tryndamere and Ryze? Although to be fair looks like Ryze put on some weight.
