Screaming for daylight

Screaming for daylight

For its first next-gen effort, Atlus is looking to freak your shit out in a very serious and remorseless way. Those scares come courtesy of the Zombie Studios-developed Daylight, which is scheduled for release in early 2014 on the PS4 and PC. We saw it in the middle of the cavernous West Hall at E3, and even with 10,000 people around, the creeping horror of it all had us desperately wanting to flee.

Daylight has a few interesting things going for it. First, its opening. When you boot up the game, youll find yourself in a creepy hospital ward, with a cell phone and not much else. The cell phone doubles as a flashlight, and the game lasts only as long as the battery power on the phone (about 45 minutes). In that time, youll need to seek out clues, find trinkets to unlock magically warded doors, and generally run like hell from petrifying ghosts. Dont expect to know where youre going, though, as levels are procedurally generated, changing each time you play.

The setting alone is frightening, and Zombie Studios (who are also working on Blacklight Retribution) is ramping up those scares by making the controls as tactile as possible. For instance, to open a door, youll hold down R2 and slowly push up on the left thumbstick. Something about the movement is just plain freaky. Oh, and perhaps best of all, PS4s Eye will be watching you, so when that jump scare comes, expect to have your picture taken.
