The SF author (you can read his novel Accelerando online) has posted an article on his blog about everything involved in going to live on distant worlds. In short, it’s a long way to go, requires a lot of energy, and would be pretty bleak – we haven’t even colonised the Gobi desert yet, why would Mars be a better idea?
The Gobi desert thing is Bruce Sterling’s observation , but Stross gives a wonderful description of just how far and how fast we’d have to go in order to live on another planet. Worth a read with your Sunday afternoon tea. Link here .
