*clears throat to make his best Cam Clarke impresion* BROOOTHER!!! I think this is by far my favorite list to come out of the brotastic week. Nothing cooler than to see brothers beat the shit out of each other! XD And I really liked all of the entries, and agree with pretty much all of them. Specially since you got the key ones for the, which is Dante/Vergil and Snake/Liquid. Which in y eyes are the most notable brotherly rivalries in gaming. By far. Also, inb4 people complain about X and Zero not being here. Since they are NOT brothers, not even in that universe's sense. X was created by Dr. Light, and Zero was created by Dr. Wily, so they have different "fathers" to begin with. MegaMan and ProtoMan, on the other hand, are both crated by Dr. Light, so they actually fit.

I would say something about the Mario Brothers in their sports spinoffs and whatnot, but seeing as how they topped another recent list, I guess it's only fair that they don't place in this one.
  • Braken67 - May 18, 2012 1:15 p.m.

don't really know if they're rivals but what about Deimos and Kratos. Deimos was the only person(besides Zeus) to defeat Kratos and there was so much more emotional issues going on. a large part of the game was devoted to finding Deimos even.
  • Scoob - May 18, 2012 1:44 p.m.

Billy & Jimmy should have been here. That fight over Marion at the end of Double Dragon was epic when I was a kid.
  • Mumb00 - May 18, 2012 1:56 p.m.

How about the Bhaalspawn from Baldur's Gate? 1) The fact that Sarevok and the protagonist were half-siblings was precisely why he tried to kill you (and you're a bro if you created your character that way). 2) In Throne of Bhaal, many of their half-siblings were slaughtered in scores by the most powerful of them, most of them bros.

One small thing, Cloud was never apart of SOLDIER. That was just a mix up with his memories. AVALANCHE was the militant group he joined and attacked Shinra with.
  • TheDudeFromNowhere - May 20, 2012 11:32 p.m.

Cloud was a part of SOLDIER. He joined the lower ranks when he was young, but never made it pass infantry. FF7 and Crisis Core can confirm this.
  • Craxi - July 7, 2012 8:09 p.m.

No he joined the shinra security force. SOLDIER are the elite members that are mako infused.
  • TheDudeFromNowhere - December 16, 2012 3:04 p.m.

    Oh yeah, you're
  • ObliqueZombie - May 18, 2012 3:11 p.m.

Man, that Mega Man entry just has me tearing up. Mainly knowing there will most likely not be a good Mega Man Legends/Battle Network/X/Zero game to come out for a long time. Rest in Peace, my favorite brotherly rivals. Ahem. I can't really add anything to this that isn't already there and well said. Great list!
  • KA87 - May 18, 2012 3:37 p.m.

This is really not a lot of bro V bro in gaming is there? With all of the games out there you would think that this plot line would be used more than it is.

I don't really nerdrage often, but this has been bothering me for 14 (yes 14) years. CLOUD STRIFE IS NOT A CLONE OF SEPHIROTH!!!!! stop saying he is. for some ridiculous reason in japanese media (final fantasy and king of fighters being the most egregious offenders) adding genetic material from another person to a preexisting person makes them a "clone" as opposed to the commonly held definition of a clone being an exact genetic duplicate. he was a guy from nibelheim who was injected with jenova cells cultivated from jenova (not sephiroth) and zack was also a random guy from gongaga who was injected with jenova cells. sephiroth called him a clone of sephiroth in disk 2 to mess with cloud and make him vulnerable to mental control so cloud would give him the black materia. My source you ask? the damn game. it shows you EXACTLY what happened during the nibelheim mission in a disk 2 "secret cutscene" if you return to the shinra massion after cloud gets his memeories right. SPOILERS INCOMING <spoilers>cloud was the guard who stayed behind with tifa, zack was the soldier paired with sephy, sephy goes nuts and burns the village down, zack tries to stop him and fails, cloud attacks and succeeds but is too injured to escape when the shinra come. both are sent to shinra mansion while the town is rebuilt with ringers for all the dead townspeople. cloud and zach areinjected with jenova cells and bombarded with mako which poisons cloud but not zack as zack already had been treated with both. they eventually escape leading to zacks death.</spoilers> cloud is NOT A CLONE!!!! he is a preexisting human who was injected with jenova cells in order to make him stronger. that's more like gene splicing than cloning. I seriously want to punch SOMEONE at square in the throat for not doing the research and letting this nonsense go one for over a decade.

    U mad?
  • pr0tostar - May 19, 2012 8:21 p.m.

Thank you for clarifying that, as I would have done the sam It's not even a matter of nerd rage. This is an information reporting site. If you can't properly cite your material (ffwiki is a wonderful thing for people who can't remember games this old) then don't even bother including them.
  • TheDudeFromNowhere - May 20, 2012 11:28 p.m.

    Correct! Thank You.
  • taokaka - May 18, 2012 5:55 p.m.

One of my favourite brotherly rivalries is Ragna and Jin in Blazblue, it's funny seeing Jin, who seriously needs to see a psychiatrist madly in love with the idea of killing his own brother and attempts to do just so while making it sound so incestuous.
  • FanofSaiyan - May 18, 2012 7:25 p.m.

Sora and Riku from Kingdom Hearts 2 is a perfect example of a brotherly rivalry.
  • BladedFalcon - May 18, 2012 8:24 p.m.

Except they are not biological brothers...? At least,a s far a I know, haven't played any of the latest games, and that series's story is so damn convoluted that anything is possible I guess.
  • TwinHallow - May 18, 2012 10:10 p.m.

i dont believe Mega man and Proto man or Cloud and Seph are BIOLOGICAL i would have them
  • BladedFalcon - May 18, 2012 10:20 p.m.

Mega Man and Proto Man are still technically brothers though, in the sense that they were created by the same person, or "father" They are as much as brothers, and robots could ever hope to be. So, again, can you say that for Sora and Rikku? If they are just only close friends that grew up in the same town and nearby, then it isn't really the same thing. Also, not touching the whole Cloud and Sephiroth thing because I don't remember it well enough, and i don't care to.
