Having rigorously studied martial arts growing up, Akuma and Gouken started to slowly veer into different fighting style directions. Gouken wanted to focus on the spiritual aspect of martial arts, only using them when necessary to keep the peace; Akuma was set on becoming the most powerful fighter, even if that meant embracing the darker side of fighting. Akuma believed that their teacher was holding him back because of Gouken, so he murdered their teacher, Goutetsu, and left to continue his training elsewhere. We’ve all thought of snuffing our professor during a boring lecture – Akuma actually went and did it.
This heinous act put quite a strain on their relationship, but Gouken was not deterred and continued to train himself and others – namely Ken and Ryu. Akuma came back to challenge Gouken multiple times, but was sorely defeated, only angering him more. He finally returned a final time and defeated Gouken, supposedly killing him. Little did Akuma know that Gouken’s time spent fostering his primal emotions had allowed him to simply fall into a deep coma, rather than bite the dust. We’d bet that trick would do great at parties.
