Batman: Arkham City features a new voice for Harley Quinn

Even before we played Batman: Arkham Asylum, the developer had us on its good side just by filling the game’s voice cast with regulars from Batman: The Animated Series. Mark Hamill was the Joker, Kevin Conroy played Batman, and Arleen Sorkin reprised the role she created, Harley Quinn. We had assumed Arleen would be returning in Arkham City along with the confirmed Conroy and Hamill, but developer Rosksteady has revealed the part has been recast, with the role going to voiceover vet Tara Strong,

Above: Skip to 1:09 and you’ll hear Tara Strong doing the voice

From the clip above it seems like Strong is sticking pretty close to Sorkin’s version, so much so that we didn’t even notice it was a different actress in that trailer until today. And Strong is a very accomplished actress, appearing in piles of cartoons and games, including Rikku in Final Fantasy X/X-2, Talwyn in the Ratchet series, and Rachel in Ninja Gaiden. This marks the first time Sorkin has been replaced, with Arleen supplying Harley’s voice most recently in January’s DC Universe Online.

We’re sad to see Arleen Sorkin leave the role, as writer Paul Dini even created the part with Arleen in mind. Harley was a breakout star on The Animated Series, quickly going from the relatively small part of Joker’s henchgirl to starring in multiple episodes. Ultimately she became so popular that she joined the official comic book universe, a rare feat for animated characters. Watch the below vid with some of her best moments in case you doubt Arleen’s chops:

Wow... this is the most positive response to change that I've ever seen in any comments section. Where are all the people frothing with rage? Did the Rapture take up all the douche bags? Anyway, if voices have to change, it's good that they're getting someone as accomplished as that to fill in, but I was hoping the article would give some info one why. Recaptcha: Mass ceflut I find this unsettling for some reason.

I knew something was wrong with the voice the first time I saw the trailer. I'm not even sure I want to play the game now. But for Joker, and Two Face I might have to. I'm afraid my crush on Harley will not carry over to the new voice though.

"This marks the first time Sorkin has been replaced" Not quite true. Harley was voiced by Hynden Walch in 'The Batman' animated series (doing a pretty damn good soundalike of Sorkin) and Meghan Strange played her in the Emperor Joker! episode Batman: The Brave and the Bold. However, actually REPLACED in a series - yes, this is the first.

It sucks that she's not Harley again, but the new voice sounds alright.

Tara has always been one of my favorite voices ever since her portrayal of Batgirl. She's an excellent replacement for Arleen.

I didnt even notice before somebody told us. It sounds great, I think its going to be fine.

    But WHY?
  • bgm1975 - May 23, 2011 11:53 a.m.

I hope there's a good reason. Arleen Sorkin IS Harley Quinn. Harley was created and modeled after Arleen, and to replace her is a disgrace. I'm hoping she was either busy, or wanted a break from the character (As I had heard this will be Mark Hamill's last voiceover for the Joker).

Yeah it sounds pretty good, similar but a slightly different tone. Think I slightly preferred Arleen's take but I'm not unhappy with Tara's sound. Great character nonetheless. Also I'm glad Hamill is back for one more, thought the previous game was the last time he was taking on the role.

@ Jerkweed Kimberly Brooks who voiced Ashley williams from Mass Effect did the voice for Oracle in Arkham Asylum.

This is the best voice-acting-in-a-game news I've ever heard! She must be a favourite of Suda51 as well 'cos she's been in Killer7 and either the second or both No More Heroes games.

It's strange- Tara has great range yet I can always tell it's her. She's like a female John DiMaggio.

What the hell is wrong with cat womans face? But otherwise i'm fine with the change. The dialect she uses is really what sells me on the character anyway. Sad to see Mark Hamill ending his Joker career though. It will be interesting to see who takes his place as this will inevitably lead to a sequel.

Ah, I remember that name, kinda catchy. She did Rikku on FF X and X-2... You know that already... Okay... So did Harley get a boob job? Kinda looks like it to me..

Tara Strong did batgirl in the animated series, and I think she did oracle in asylum so its pretty interesting
  • 510BrotherPanda - May 23, 2011 4:23 a.m.

Tara Strong is still great, regardless of whether she was in the original Animated Series. I hope the switch works out for the best, for the people that will play this...

I WOULD have been annoyed by this if it wasn't for my HUGE crush on Tera Strong, she's basically voiced every cartoon chick I've ever loved, including Raven from Teen Titans Go and Ingrid from Fillmore...it's the voice man DAT VOICE
  • AirickG - May 23, 2011 4:04 a.m.

I just hope she's still as awesomely bat-shit (pun!) crazy
  • ChiChiRocket - May 23, 2011 4 a.m.

    Not sure if want...
