Activision: Kinect is too expensive

In the same revealing EDGE interview in which he implied that the sacked Infinity Ward execs were criminals, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick expressed concern over the price of Microsoft's controllerless motion controls. He does think 3D games are totally radical though.

"I think that 3D is super-compelling," he said. "The push has come from film but, personally, I find that live action in 3D is disruptive to the storytelling. But games in 3D are incredible. And when you see bullets whizzing past your ear, or imagine you're playing Guitar Hero over the internet and your bass player is right next to you, that's a really great enhancement of a game experience.

"I think 3D was made for videogames, and I'm very excited about that. With Kinect... I love it as an idea, but [Microsoft has] got to get the price down."

Above: Is this $149.99 worth of "weeeeeeeeeeeeee?"

Activision does love it some peripherals, though, and while Kotick is wary about the price, he believes that Kinect is good for something, as long as it's the right peripheral for the job.

"If the fantasy is to unleash your inner rock star, you need a guitar, or you need a mic, or a DJ booth," he said. "Kinect and Move are superb for dance games - we don’t need to make a dance pad if you have Kinect. So as long as we think a peripheral is going to deliver something that’s compelling and interesting and innovative we’ll support it."

Kinect releases on November 4th in the US and November 10th in the UK for $149.99 and £129.99. Given the initial investment of owning an Xbox 360, and that the only included game is Kinect Adventures, which you probably don't want, it's an expensive proposition. The same can be said of the PlayStation Move bundle, which is $99.99 USD, but only includes one controller.

We're not sure how in love with 3D we are (excluding the 3DS), but regarding motion controls, well gosh, we agree with Kotick. Anyone planning to pick up Kinect on day one? When the price comes down? Ever?

But extra 10$ for MW2 and 15$ per map pack are just right, you say?

i agree that the Kinect is too expensive(Natal is a cooler name), and i agree that map packs should not be 15$ maybe 10$. but 3-d is decent but when will there be virtual reality games??

Coming from the same guy who wants to increase the price of peripherals? I call bullshizzle. Then again, Kinect sales only hurt Activision game sales while the obviously superior peripherals for their games (all of my Guitar Hero guitars have broken) can only help them by being more expensive!

wii= 120 for 2 controllers and 2 nunchucks PS3= 210 for 2 controllers, 2 navigators, and camera 360= 150 for camera that accommodates two people

Sounds to me like he doesn't like Kinect because you can't tack on a new peripheral every time you try to sell a game for it.

I'm getting kinect for dance central and to control my xbox with voice and gestures. But it's prob. not a day one purchase for me maybe a month or two months later

Never thought I'd hear the words "it's too expensive" out of Kotick's mouth...
  • PIZZAKING92 - September 27, 2010 8:33 p.m.

I agree, Kinect is to expensive.

Kotick is doing absolutely nothing to improve his or his company's image. They kill games they can't "exploit", try to fuck with Respawn, and think Kinect is too pricey, despite raking in the cash from their various "exploited" franchises. Activision needs to get some *real* PR STAT, or do something to shut Kotick's mouth. As usual, he makes perfect sense business-wise, but is further driving a stake through his company's image by bringing that business to the gamers.

@FNG Buy the PS Move bundle 99.99 (Move Controller, Camera, Game) and an extra Move Controller 49.99. We don't really need nav controllers. Total price: 150.00. So technically, its the same price between the Kinect and Move.
  • CoryRX8 - September 27, 2010 9:07 p.m.

@Crabhand No kidding. $150 is too much for Kinect, but $120 is the right price for Tony Hawk: Ride? That's hilarious. I'll also venture a guess that Kinect comes with a better game than Ride's skateboard peripheral did.

    Hy-po-crite! Hy-po-crite! Hy-po-crite!
  • Amnesiac - September 27, 2010 9:12 p.m.

@CH3BURASKA: That's the real reason why I can't stand Activision: They don't even need to bother with better PR. Those "exploited" franchises are bought largely by people who will never hear nor care about comments like these. If he were working for any other company, Kotick would be a walking PR disaster. But because it's Acti, Kotick can say shit like this and easily get away with it. That is what I hate most about him and Activision.
  • FNG - September 27, 2010 10:29 p.m.

@Electrix64 I was talking about a setup for 2 people.
  • FNG - September 27, 2010 10:30 p.m.

@kjowns That's still the most expensive and I was quoting gamestop, which is where most people will get it.
  • Amnesiac - September 27, 2010 11:05 p.m.

@FNG: $150 _is_ the price for two people to use Move as long as you don't need the nav controller.
  • nadrewod999 - September 27, 2010 11:14 p.m.

Kinect = $150 worth of EPIC FAIL Move = $150 worth of AWESOME 3D gaming = Wasted money if you only have one working eye (like me)
  • BoondockSaint54 - September 28, 2010 12:13 a.m.

I'm with him on the Kinect- way to expensive. Not so much on the 3D. I hate the fad and can't wait for it to be over.
